Mine sounds like that too, but not quite as pronounced. Let us know what you find out. What is your mileage and what do you do with the truck. I have a buddy with a Chebby gasser and he has some bad tings and knocks, they are caused by carbon build up. Chebby dealer say its normal for the model and the only way to stop it is to clean out the exhaust valves and manifold, until it comes back. Possiblity?

Dealer replaced my #1 injector today and the knock is gone. Mine sounded just like yours. 22k miles on it. I noticed the problem for the first time about 2 weeks ago.

 Two days ago I drove my truck and while waiting at a light my started making that noise. Sitting at idle with the truck in neutral so there was no load on the motor. I wasn't sure what it was until listening to your sound clip. I bumped the go pedal and let it idle back down and the noise went away. I've had the truck since April 17th and I've got 2300 miles on it so it's not like I've driven it a whole bunch. I'm going to keep an eye on it and take it in if it becomes and issue. Thanks for the info.

Noise

My truck was very quiet when I first got it. Now with 12,xxx miles she has a little more noise, but nothing like the sound clip.

Well for what its worth mine sounds somewhat the same as well. I also notice white smoke on hard acceleration. Something that was not the case until recently. Hope theres no issue here. :(

I have around 8000 miles on my HO '03. Periodically, it will make similar sounds. I notice it more so when the tank is very low on fuel. I can fill it up and drive for 20 miles or so and it is gone. It will usually come back again if I run it real low. (real low = 1/8 tank) I am beginning to speculate that the fuel may be sloshing around in the tank and possibly picking up some air or foam.

Personally, I will not get concerned unless it becomes more frequent or I notice any changes in performance.

I had a PSD that had the “Ford Knock” someone mentioned earlier. That bothered me primarily because it was accompanied by a substantial engine miss.

Well it seams as though the majority of people are having this issue. I guess we will just have to wait and see what comes of it.

The picking up of air into the line has me wondering now. My old Ford 7. 3PSD did this. I dropped the tank and removed the "mixing" valve that mixes return fuel with new fuel and problem solved. It also added some performance as well. It would do this if I let it get below 1/4 tank.

I cannot access the clip either is say its locked?

The clip is working fine - just accessed it a few minutes ago.

Good luck on your third gen engine noises. My loudy 12 valve clanks along and is averaging 20+ mpg in the 100 F and humidity of Houston traffic. I love it - but also would someday like one of the newer trucks.

An interesting theory... I do notice mine also seems to make more noise when the tank gets low.

Burkhard,

Any chance you can ask them for the old injector? I'd be willing to pay you a reasonable fee for it. It would be nice if we could find out just exactly what constitutes a "bad" injector.

With the replacement injectors coming straight from Cummins, one would think that the core would be retained. I went to my dealer today and had an injector diagnosed as bad (3800 miles, been making noise since about 1000 miles or less). I could record my engine noise as it clanks way more than DBurkhard's, even in neutral. My question is how do I get the sound bite uploaded from my camcorder. I suppose I could just leave the lens cover on and take a movie clip and upload the mpeg from the camcorder.

They won't give the injector to me. Said it has to be sent back for analysis.

The new injector came in and is being installed today.

Re engine knock

Your engine sounds like my '03 H/O 555. I don't think there is anything

out of order with it. If the there is an injector in trouble it'll

sound a lot louder than that. I'm not convinced that the so-called

pre-shot of fuel into the cylinder is something that will always take

place as the engine gets older and in some cases it may not take

place in a new vehicle. One day my truck has a particular sound

while a day or two later it may have a different sound, but it always

sounds better after a road trip which it seldom experiences.

My truck seems to be much noiser with 25,000 miles on it than it

did when it was new. Different fuel values (cetane) may account

for some differences.

Anyway it will be interesting to find out what develops from your

dealer mechanic.

My engine sounded quite a bit worse just a couple days after I uploaded the sound clip. The knocking was much more severe and got to the point I didn't even have to put it in drive to get the knock going. EVERYONE that heard my truck agreed something was definitely not right. As good as the sound file was, it lost some of the knocking sound that was more obvious in person.

I haven't picked up the truck yet, so I haven't been able to upload a new and hopefully "quiet" engine sound.

Mine sounds the same. I heard it yesterday after I changed the oil. I had the hood open and that is how I noticed it. Now I hear it all the time. :{ :(
