Damn noise!

85000 miles.

I have a noise coming from under my truck that is driving me nuts. When driving on rough roads (which all county & state highways in Ohio are) I get a "clunk" at every pot hole.

I have replaced all ball joints (this helped) and pried and beat on everything under the truck without finding anything loose. Next I'm going to replace the shocks.

Any suggestions besides turning the radio up?

Check the bottom shock mounting bolt, it has to be real tight and the bolts front and rear on all four control arms. JM. 02

Mine did the same thing. Found the ends at the stabilizer bar worn out. (they look like small tie rod ends.

Mine did the same thing, replaced my sway bar end links. No more clunk. Look in issue 58, page 156. That is what I put on my truck.

JVas, the intercooler was touching the frame on the left side on my 04. I hated it for three years. It was like pouring clabbored milk on my Cherios every time I got in it. Spent a BUNCH of time and money trying find it. A local wrench found it when we were installing guages, a Roktec vibration kit, and Bilsteins prior to a trip to Alaska last May. Thought I had a new truck! Mark

Mine is a two wheel drive but had the little clunk. It was the lower shock mounting bolts on the driver's side. Good call.

Try the rubber bushings where the sway bar mounts to the chassis. I had a car that pounded and that fixed it.

I had a 97 right hand drive Cherokee on a rural mail route that did this. Replacing the bushings cured it. Mark

Found it!!

Sway bar bushings replaced and noise is gone. Thanks for the suggestions.

I found another possible solution for future reference. The lower shock mount fixed mine for the most part but then I started noticing that if I got onto a road with "ripples" a different "clunk" was starting. Also, I could feel it in the steering wheel when it clunked. No unusual tire wear and ball joints checked out OK.



After several trips under the truck with a rubber hammer, I finally found it yesterday. I kicked the front drivers side tire and noticed a clunk. Hit it with the rubber hammer and few times and was able to make it clunk everytime. So I pulled the wheel and started tapping. It was the caliper. It apparently had vibrated a thin spot into the anti rattle clips. I tapped the clip inward to its stop and the caliper tightened up. So today, I put on new brake pads and they came with new clips. Now both calipers are nice and tight with no play. I took the truck down a little washboard road for the test and all the noise is gone.
