I recently replaced the front axle u-joints and ball studs. Unfortunately, removing and replacing the axle shafts caused the oil seal on the left side to start leaking. The sevice manual doesn't give much info on this subject other than to show several special tools required to remove the old seal. If any one out there has been down this path and could lend some advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

Bill, If it is the driver's side, it is my understanding that the differential will need to be removed to replace it. The passenger side can be done through the vacuum motor shift assembly cover.

When you pulled the axle shaft, did you raise that side of the axle? If not, gear lube can run down into the axle housing and leak for a few hundred miles. How many miles since you did the work?

Bill,

Last year I replaced the front rotors, after that the drivers side axle seal started to leak. I did a search on the TDR and found a lot of info & links that would help. Some of the guys said to give it time, that sometimes the seals will stop leaking. I know that my leak has stopped during the winter. I just hope it does not come back. It sounds like a tough job.

Give it a couple weeks, no kidding! Mine dripped for over 2 weeks from what had gotten into the axle tube while replacing balljoints and rotors. The mechanic who was state inspecting it for Md. registration almost didn't pass it for this reason! It DID stop however... I went back and showed him!
