Well let me ask this, is, was there on a Dodge, a Dana 44 'Rear End'? Or was it just a front end? My brother in law is looking for a 60 rear and I found a 70's Dodge 3/4 ton SRW 8 lug 4. 11 gears with the hubs sticking out as in a Dana, at a junk yard, but the owner tells me its a Dana 44. What do ya think? Thanks Bill

I believe that all dana axles have the model cast into the top of them. If you look at the axle from the top then there will be a "44" or a "60" or whatever it is cast in the housing. As for your 70's dodge I think that if it is in fact a 3/4 ton and the owner is telling you that its a dana 44 I don't think he knows what he has. I have been into dodge trucks all of my life and have never seen a true 3/4 ton with a 44. I have seen them with a corprate 9 1/4" but not a 44. If it does not have a stopsign shaped cover then I'd bet its a 60.

While looking at the cover, the lower right hand corner, scrap away all the dirt, grease, mud and you should find the raised number on it, if it is a Dana axel. If it is the rear axel then it should say "60". I am assuming that you indeed are talking about the rear axel. Some people refeer to axels in general as read ends. I have never seen anything besides dana 60's in a standard dodge 3/4 ton truck rear. Sometimes the one tons had 70 rears. Dodge used the heck out of Dana 44 Fronts in the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks(5 and 8 lug). These will have "44F" on the right lower corner as you look at the cover of the diff. I have never seen a 70's dodge with a 44 rear, they aren't neer tough enough!

I have a couple of each behind my dad's shed.

Never seen a D44 in the rear of any 8 lug truck. All dodge used in the rear on 3/4 ton and larger was D60, D70, or D80. Most of the gassers of the '70's and '80's will be D60. The diesels came with either a D70, or D80. Although I have seen a couple out there that are not full floating- (with no hub sticking out in the center of wheel) in a dana or chrysler corporate 9 1/4". Rare. But in gassers only.

Appreciate it guys. If the bro in law is interested in it, we'll just say we want that D44 you were talking bout to the junkyard owner, then point it out to him. Bill
