I have been seeing some stuff about putting Dana 80 (35 spline) axle shafts in a Dana 70. What else is needed in this build up? Do I need an 80 carrier? If not what do I need to make my carrier accept a 35 spline axle? Will an 80 carrier/ ring and pinion fit in a 70? I am about to change out my gears so this would be ever so helpfull before I start. Thanks

hold on there--I'm pretty sure they don't use the same axles--I know as I broke a 70 axle and decided to upgrade my whole rearend and swapped in an 80 because the 80 axles are bigger than the 70's---

but back to the question--I don't think you can do what you want--about the only thing you can do is buy upgraded axles for your 70---you can however put a 70 locker in an 80--you need to drill out some holes and bolt on the ring gear, but the70 case is to small to try and make 80 parts fit---there may be other issues, so someone with gear knowledge will have to tell you for sure or get to a super good rearend shop and ask---good luck..... chris

Go to Fritz`s Dodge Ram Tech and you will find all the info you want on the Dodge`s. The only difference between the D-70 and Hybird D-80 is the center section. (ring & pinion and bearings)

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/specs/axle/rear_axle.html ---here's the link that says ata is right and I'm wrong--but there's some differences between the two axles as I've had them in my hands--they may be the same size as they enter the carrier, but my memory doesn't recall this--but for sure the 70 axles taper down to a smaller diameter along their length (maybe starting at the 1/2 point) towards the hub where they are indeed smaller in diameter than 1. 5"--I don't remember how much smaller but it's definitely noticeable--

I can't remember if the 80 axles taper or not--I want to say they don't, but if they do it's not as much as the 70's--the dually axles have no taper to my knowledge---

Fritz's site is great, but there are these small differences which don't get mentioned---chris
