Dana 70 chatter after rebuild???

I rebuilt the rear end because of clunking on tight turns after a good highway run (i. e. when the diff was good and hot). A couple of the clutch packs had the friction material completely stripped away. Also, bearings, races, and spider gear surfaces were pitted. Now I've got it rebuilt and I'm still hearing some chatter when it's warm, though not as loud as before, even just around town. I've been taking it easy since the rebuild to break it in slowly. Anyone know if it's normal to have some noise as it breaks in? Thanks.

Have you added any mopar modifier to the diff. if you havent you need some in a non slip diff . some gear oil like royal purple and amsoil dont need . if you are using strait gear oil use addative. my 2 cts.

Two bottles of Mopar Limited slip additive should cure the chatter. If you have already added it, hmmm... ...

Actually, you want to add a few ounces of friction modifier, go do some figure 8s to work it in and then see if the chatter stops. If not, add a couple of more ounces and repeat the process.



You don't want any more friction modifier than is absolutely necessary to eliminate the clutch chatter. If you have too much, your LSD won't be an LSD any more! :{

When I rebuilt mine, I did all the above advice and still had chatter (more noticable when cold)... . now after about 2500 miles I noticed that all chatter was gone, not sure when it went away as I was getting used to it :-laf

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did add the friction modifier: one bottle. I'm pretty sure the chatter is normal, warm-diff, LSD chatter; but, I wanted to hear from some others if theirs chatter, too. I'll give it a little longer to break in before I add any more modifier.

I changed oil in my dana 70 a while back and it took 2-bottles of modifier before it stopped chattering. I used the friction modifier made by dana that i picked up at a rearend shop.

When we had Mom's redone, we had some chatter, and I took the carrier out, and the hoosier who did it put th eclutches and packs in in the wrogn order Why can people in this wretched part of the country not read directions? He siad it hadnt made any difference in the Fords he had done. Does this look like a $*(%*% FORD?! ANyway, we (I) had to replace the clutches 3 years later. *I* did it according to the directions, and she still has some grabbing around certain corners which I dont like. AFter burning up the clutches in this rig twice, I'd rather have it slip a little than be too tight.



You did soak the clutches in the friction modifier overnight, right? If not, they may not have absorbed enough of it to let things slide, and will end up redoing them inthe near future. The directions call for 30min, but that apparently wasnt long enough last time (02- after I corected above- mentioned hoosier's mistake. )
