My 92 with limited slip makes a funny shake or vibration when turning left or right after going staight for about 30 miles. Can i just put a new clutch pack in the rear to fix this? I change rear grease every 30,000 miles and always add the friction modifier, but it isn,t getting any better.

I could use a set of the "steel on steel" packs, I'm sure others could too. Figure out the cost of a run of packs and post it, all those who want a set can chip in so you don't have to eat them all.

Is there such a thing as adding too much friction modifier to the rear end? I have used as much as 2 bottles but the truck still shakes and vibrates when turning. Up until a few years ago i would feel just a chirp when turning, but now it vibrates the whole truck for a while. How much of a job is it to change the clutch pack or just eliminate it all together?

clutch packs

Elimimating them altogether means that you will have to use a different ring gear carrier. That will mean a complete reset of the bearings and shims to get the ring gear set to the pinion. You can replace the clutch plates by simply taking the unit apart and putting it back together with the new clutches installed. The carrier deminsions will remain the same as far as the pinion setup. Not too much of a chore really.

I cannot imagine driving one of these trucks, even stock with an open rear end. I have traction troubles with my nice tight LSD. Two bottle is minimum for the large dana 70 diff, especially if it is the crap that doesn't work well. I would find a drivetrain shop that does work and get a couple doses of what they use. If they work on diff's then they know what works to tame aggressive LSD's.

My LSD has been abused since day one. Many sideways exits from the Fareway store on to the main street on Saturday nights, mud and water up to the rocker panels, snow and ice, and heavy trailers getting pulled around corners.

I know these lsd,s make noise when turning but is it normal to sound and feel like your going over speed bumps when turning?

No-that almost sounds like driving my old 75 with the welded rear diff.

Sounds like if some friction modifier won't help, the rear diff needs to be tore down and the clutch packs, spider gears need inspected.

I know how you feel, the last trip I took with the trailer, it felt like I was on a cobblestone street when turning. When I get home from vacation, I'm gonna put some of the Ford stuff in it to see if it will tame the chatter.

know the feeling about a chattering LSD. It probably has worn clutches in it, had the same problem in an older ramcharger. wish my 93 d250 ctd had a LSD in it, it gets stuck on wet grass... . lol.
