Anyone replaced the axle seals on this diff ? removing the flange bolts does the axle just pull out with the bearings and seal?

have one side leaking some fluid ,noticed when adjusting brakes. Rear end has 602,000 kms first sign of any problem.

I'm not positive, but I'd bet the procedure is the same as my "92 D-70.
Remove the 8 bolts (9/16" socket) for the axle flange in the center of the hub, and slide the shaft out. Rmove the lock key in the big nut and unscrew the nut (2-9/16" socket, usually available at your local parts store. ) The drum & hub will then slide off the axle. The seal is in the rear (inner) end of the hub and is replaced like any other seal.
Hope this helps.
If you PM me I'll send you copies of the pages for the procedure from my 1992 factory service manual.

I didn't have to pull the axle nut to swap my drums on my 98. Lug nuts and wheel, then the drum slid right off. Might make it easier to pull the hub if you take the drum off first. :)

Yes, the later models do have what is called "outboard mounted" drums, that can be removed independently of the hub, as opposed to the type on my older Dodge "inboard mounted" that has the drum retained on the hub by the wheel studs being pressed through the drum into the hub.

However, the seal is in the hub, which will have to be removed to access, and remove & replace, the seal. Also, inspect the bearings while you have the chance.

Having said that, I agree removing the drum first will mean less weight to handle when removing the hub.

thanks for your help ,managed to get it done . seal had been leaking awhile but no evidence of it outside the drum.
seems the leak was small and mixed with the brake dust formed a thick paste , noticed it when I removed the backing plate plug to adjust the brake. The torque for the 8 axle bolts 90 ft. lbs. ,one broke of at the head at 50 ft. lbs. metal fatigue after 15 years and over 600,000 kms. original vp-44 and injectors still going strong at this mileage.
