Could someone please tell me how to tell if I have a Dana 70 or Dana 80?. I can discern the gear ratio from all the goofy #'s on the tag, but no hint of the model. I've read different accounts of What's in this thing. Dodge tech man doesn't tell me I read one place that 2500 truck has the 70 and the 3500 has 80, but another place showed 70 and 80 in 2500's ? Help. . Thanks.

Dana 80

Should be a Dana 80; as factory 2500's equipped with a manual transmission and Cummins engine come with 80's. Same truck with an auto would come with a 70.

If you look on the differential cover just to the left of the fill plug on the ring protrusion it should be stamped. The numbers and letters are about 3/16 in tall. You have to look real close because the paint on the cover hides them. They are there on my 97 anyhow.

I seem to remember reading on here somewhere that the 2500 trucks with the manuals have Dana 70/80 hybrids. But I have a 2500 auto so I'm not so sure  .

I don't know what parts would be from which 70/80   sorry.

you have the 80 as stated before--all manuals have the 80 and all autos have the 70--the 80 rears are a hybrid concerning the axle shafts on the 2500 model---if you look at the outer end of the axle as it connects to the backing plate you will see the axle tube narrows from 4" to 3. 5"(approximately) and the axle shafts are likewise tapered, but it's a much longer taper---now I believe it's been said you can change the axle if you change the bearings and maybe some other parts--been a while back ----I could be wrong though on that last bit----chris

Thanks for the input guys. . I must have an 80. The tags are screwed up. Doesn't have the small (one bolt) tag, but has a lg. (two bolt) tag, but on the right instead of the left. . unlike what 'the book' says they should be. . JG
