Hey guys, I just sleeved and installed a new seal on the drivers side. At first, it was fine, but after about 200mi, it is leaking worse then before. Has anyone else had this problem? I have had to install a lot of sleeves before, but I have never had a sleeved and sealed set-up leak. If you have any solutions, I would like to hear about it, otherwise it is off to the dealer :(

Thank you,

Russell

Russ,

I had the same thing happen to me. I got PO'd when it happened after I fixed it and took it in to a rear end shop. Seems I left a sharp edge on the sleeve when I trimmed it and that tore the new seal when I put it back together. The rear end shop cleaned the sleeve up, put in new seals(again), and put it back together. Has been fine ever since.

Don't know if this is your problem but the chances are good it is. (Or something close to it). Hope this helps.

Rear Seal

Hey Russel,

Sounds like my good friend Murphy has been helping you too. I just installed speedi-sleeves and new seals. Had a dang oil leak too. But it was from the new outer steel gasket that is between the hub and axle shaft. A little hi-tach solved that problem. I would not use silicone as it is too slippery. The axle relies on friction to hold it to the hub. Also, if you have to install new seals, Vasoline works real well for lubing the seals up for the install. Or STP engine treatment works too. Much more slippery than 80W90 gear oil. Good luck!

speedi sleeve

:) Hey Russel, did you use locktite between the sleeve and the tube? Also is is important to use vasoline on the new seal when installing. When I trimmed off the speedi sleeve, i used electrical tape to protect the sealsurface against damage while cutting the edge off. Also, did you seal the outer edge of the seal? No need to go to the dealer, this isn't rocket science here, just a little murphys law. It happens, could be a bad seal or turned lip. Worth a second look, let us know what you find, we can help. Tim:)

I also have a rear axel leak I need to fix. Where do you get these "speedy sleeves"? Is there a part number I need to ask for? Thanks, Henry

Part Numbers

Henry,

The speedi sleeve part number is 99287. Make sure to use the green cylindrical loctite for securing them to the axle. For a driver, I used a piece of PVC plastic. It is threaded on one end for a 3" cap and made to slip over a 3" piece of pipe. Cost me $1. 99. Just make sure to go slow and straight. Also, do like Tim1 said and put electrical tape around them when you trim them off. I used a dremel tool. I would wrap the sleeves about 4 times as 2 times is too thin, DOH. But I fixed it with some emery cloth. Good luck. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Jeremy

Henry,

The ones I got were Chicago Rawhide. I don't think the parts guy crossed any numbers. You can get them at Car Quest or NAPA. That number should get you the part you need one way or another. Sorry I can't help you out more.

Rear Axle Leak

I also had rear axle seal leaking problem. I replaced the seals several times and after a few weeks they started leaking again. I installed the repair sleeves and they still continued too leak.

I posted my problem on the TDR and A fellow TDR member suggested to drive the seals into the hub only until they were flush with the outer edge of the seal opening on the hub. I did this and am happy to say I have not had another leak since. I do not remember the members name which helped me as this has been approximately 2 years ago but I do offer my sincere thanks again for his help. I hope this helps you and possibly others as I know how frustrating this problem can be.

Another idea

Hey Russell,

Had another idea that may or may not have thought of. Have you checked the differential breather to make sure it is breathing? If not the differential will build pressure and push oil past the seals. Have a great Christmas!

Jeremy

Hey guys, Merry Christmas and thanks a lot! Too bad I have been too busy to pay attention to the TDR, I already made an appointment to visit the dealer. I figured it would be a good thing, replace the drive shaft carrier bearing, check the differential backlash, replace the pinion seal, and yeah, fix the seal I screwed up :)

Answers:

No lock tite on the sleeve, the size I needed was so tight of a tolerance, it just wouldn't be a problem.

Yup, forgot the vasoline.

And there is a chance I dorked up the seal when I put the drum back on

I am sure that the dealer won't have a problem telling me what they had to do in a detailed invoice :D

Thank you all,

Russell
