Does this rear axle have a locker installed into it. The noise you talking about sounds like one to me. This is some of the normal sounds you get from a locker.

If you do not have a locker. Then you have a problem with your spider gears or the carrier assy somewhere. The noise being only made in turns or backing up means it is only when the spider gears are walking around themselfs.

Block the wheels of the truck. Put it into netural and go under it and grab the driveshaft. Try to turn it. Let us know how much play or slack you feel.

Next thing to try. Jack the truck up and put it on jack stands. Start the truck and see if both wheels turn while in gear idling. If both do not. Do you hear the noise when only one wheel is turning with out a load on it?

Do you have the factory limited slip differential? Alot of dually's came with them and suspect that you do. Did the shop rebuild the LSD? If not then that is your problem. If it only makes noise going around corners then it almost certainly is in the diffential. If it were me I would go to the dealer and buy a servce manual (if you haven't already) and pull it apart. First I would ask them if they rebuilt it and if they did ask them if they added friction modifier to the oil if they did then I would add another bottle becuase they did not get enough in. I know that when I rebuild my LSD it took to bottles of modifier to get rid of the chatter around corners. If they did not rebuild it, its very easy to do and the rebuild kit is only about $60 and won't take more than a few hours.

it was new

rear end noise

:( Bill, when my rear differential was making the clunking sound that yours is, it was the ring and pinion teeth broken in places. Pop the cover off and all will be evident. Good luck. By the way, bill, I haven't put the nv4500 and the bell housing in yet that I got from you, the getrag quietied right down when I added extra oil, so is in the corner waiting! Tim

This tell me you have a limited slip in it. Did the shop add the limited slip additive? If not this will cause the sounds your hearing.

Any sound while turning with a limited slip is not normal.

I just installed a new limited slip clutch kit in my Dana 70 last Saturday. The new clutch kit I installed, had instructions that recommended soaking the new clutch disk's in the friction modifier, prior to assembly.

I also noticed the new clutch kit came with twice the number of stators and rotors required to do the job. I still have enough new parts left over to do one more Dana 70 differential. If you want the other kit, it's yours for $20. 00, and I will even cover the postage and handling for you.

Before I tore my differential down, it made a terrible metal grinding noise when turning sharp corners, and would be very jerky when backing up, especially on an incline. I pulled the rear cover expecting to see the worse, and to my surprise, the gears and bearings were all in very good condition. My only problem was the clutch pack.

:)
