Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) When to change trans. fluid

Speedo pickup is in the transmission/transfer case. The tone ring (reluctor?) in the rear end is for ABS.

Will the tone ring not bolt under the ring gear on your locker, like the stock unit?

The speedo should get its signal from the reluctor wheel in the rearend. I changed the ring and pinion on my 98'. The speedo is still correct. If the speedo gets its signal from the trans/transfer case, my gear change would make my speedo incorrect.

did your reluctor ring come off of your diff when you changed your gears or was it machined into your diff housing i. e. not removable. if they are removable then i can use the detroit lock i have as it doesnt have a reluctor wheel

I had someone else set up the rear for me. It should be a removable item. I cant see the factory machining the reluctor wheel as one piece with the diff. Isnt your stock carrier a posi unit? I have a spare Dana 70 in the shed. I can look for you if you need me to. Just to be sure. Let me know.

Reluctor ring

Rod, this is what I found out. The reluctor wheel is held on to the carrier via a slight press fit. The replacement carrier you have should be the same outside diameter as your stock carrier. (hopefully) After you mount the ring gear on the carrier you simply set the reluctor wheel onto the carrier and tap it down with a rubber or brass hammer seating up against the back of the ring gear. If the aftermarket carrier is not the same size. There is a company that sells a pickup and converter so that you can still have your speedo. The first choice is cheaper. If you need the name of the company let me know and I can get it to you. Hope this helps.

Abbott Enterprises in Pine Bluff Ark. Would be 1st on the list as well as Dakota Digital. If you google "speedometer converter" you should be able to find them. I will be calling Abbott for a converter for a Suburban I am doing. Hope this helps. Erik

if the speedo is in the tranfercase why has my speedo quit twice and when i replace the sensor pickup in the rear end it works again?

Ahh, now I'm back from vacation and you've filled out your sig...

Because you have a '98 12v. '98+ use the ABS sensor in the diff.

97 and older use a speed sensor in the transmission/transfer case.
