I am hearing a noise coming from my rear axle that's slowly getting worse. It can best be described as a rythmic clicking that occurs mainly during deceleration. I have checked the wheel bearings by removing brake drums and rotating/feeling each hub for roughness {no disassembly yet}. It doesn't seem to be related to turning left or right. I have a Mag Hytech cover and the magnet is free of any metal particles. Does anyone have any first hand experience with a similar situation? I am prepared to disassemble the differential assembly but feedback from someone who has been there would be helpful. This is a limited slip axle. Thanx in advance.

Same Noise in Rear end

Hi there mike I've have 1998 4X4 with the tow package. I have been having the same problem and can't seem to track it down its not consistent enough I was on a trip to Las Vegas about 400 miles away and every time I stopped for gas there was a loud clicking or clunking noise from the rear end and I awns't turning left or right. I'm home now and no more noise. Anyone with any ideas would be appreciated.

My guess is the limited slip clutches based on the "depth" of the sound... kind of light and clicky sound. The ujoints are fine, it's not the kind of sound associated with a chipped gear or something heavy duty. I thought also it might be one of the wheel bearing roller retainers. Oh well.

I had an old El Camino that made a similar noise. Never figured it out until the day the pinion bearing seized! :( You might look there next.
