I am the proud owner of a 2000, 2500 4x4 road pounder, it has a Dana 80 rear axle single wheel's on each end.

The outer axle seal is leaking on the right side. I am concerned that I have purchased the correct seal from my dealer. The dealer could not verify the 3/4 ton seal was for the Dana 80. In one of the Earth Roamer articles it was mentioned that the 8800gvw rear axle in the 2500 is the same axle that was under the 3500 frame.

Does anyone know if the 8800gvw Dana 80 takes what the dealer calls a 3/4 ton seal Mopar #5003464AA,, or the 1 ton seal,,, that my dealer did not have in stock.

Any information will be appreciated.

Szabo,

I have one right beside me for a '98 2500 with Dana 80. It's the same number. 05003464AA. I don't know if it will work for my new '01 2500 with Dana 70 or not. It's alittle bit of a bear to get the old seal out but as an after thought, I could have bolted the hub to the wheel I was sitting on to hold it while I pryed the seal out. It was rather comical the way I fought with it while sitting on the solution. I used a pretty good size pry bar. Anyhow, that's the same number for a '98 2500 Dana 80 axle seal.

Buy from NAPA!!!

Get the same part from NAPA for half the price. If someone has a seal, it will have the national number on it. ie 28746 (for a 96 with a dana 80 hybrid)

Chicago Rawhide 28746 cost about $8. 50 at Pep Boys. The Raybestos 451 PG+ shoes for the 3/4 ton Dana run about $60. Since we have Dana 70 ends with Dana 80 center and axle tubes (hence the term "hybrid"), we use the same seals as a 70.

Oh, yeah, the easy way to remove the seal is this: put two blocks of wood, 2x4 or 4x4, under the studs (each block will support two studs). Using a bearing race installer tool like Lisle makes (or an extension and the right size big socket), tap on the inner bearing race of the bearing. Be careful you don't hit the stamped steel roller cage. The bearing will drive out the seal.

Thanks For the Info, The next seal will be from Napa, I paid $25. 00 for this one. Using the bearing to drive out the seal sounds like a good plan.

Thanks !!

Which axle does the 2002 RAM 2500 have? Dana 70, 80, or 80 hybrid?
