Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Dana 80 diff cover

What did the Dana 80 covers come from the factory with for sealent or a gasket? I just changed the oil in both of mine and they had a grey silicone type stuff. After seeing the way maintence has been done I'm thinking that the grey sealent is possibly factory .

My 2002 3500 dually had a gray sealant around the cover from the factory when I changed fluid. I used Permatex Hi-Temp gray to reseal it.

There are gaskets available but RTV works just as well

So basically I've got two trucks with 230000 and 240000 miles on oem oil ? Sweet.

Or someone used grey silicone to put it back on. I'm getting ready to do mine on my recently acquired '98 with 235k. The shocks were OEM, won't surprise me if the diff fluid is too.

Well I know the one owner personally and I know whqt his maintence habits are and they ain't good he blew up the origional engine 24 valve with 220000 miles on at the time and bone stock I can just about guarantee he never changed the oil that came with the replacement motor . The other truck I bought from a guy who supposedly only owned the truck for a year and a half it had a bad head gasket when I bought it and I'm pretty sure buy the looks of it all he did was add fuel and maybe sometimes some oil .

The gaskets are more forgiving on the trail but if the cover is undisturbed it works great.The oem replacement is now orange the grey worked fair the orange is great.

I've went back on with black rtv I have had great luck with and it seems to have excellent stick em qualities
