Wondering how to identify each. If I have an '01 six speed HO 4x4 will I most likely have an 80 rear and what about the front?

Is this correct? I didn't know that the 5-speeds also got the 80, but it would make sense if they did.

I've got an '01. 5 with the 5 spd, and recently had to replace the pinion seal on the back rear end. When I bought the seal and nut, I was asked if it was a 70 or 80, and the parts guy looked rather surprised that I knew right off the bat when I said '80'. Got the parts home, did the seal and nut replacement and everything was fine. Guess it really must have been an 80!

All Dodge diesel powered trucks used the D-60 front axle, thru "02". All 89-93 used D-70 rear. All 94-02 standard trans. used D-80 rear, autos used D-70 rear. The D-70 used 3. 5" axle housing tubes, the D-80 uses 4", the D-70 uses 10. 5" ring gear the 80 uses 11".
