Can anyone tell me when the break in production between the powerlock posi and the tracklock posi was?As close as I can tell some time in 98 or 99. Which one works the best, and how can you tell which one you have by looking at them? Thanks , Dave from warm snowless Alaska

The tracklok uses 2 spider gears and the powerlok uses 4. The powerlock can be made 'tighter' by installing more clutch disks, and is generally a better and stronger unit. They have both been made for quite some time by Dana/Spicer. I have powerloks front & rear in my truck, and they work good.

Forgot to add: IF you supply any knowledgeable gear shop with the Bill Of Materials (BOM) number stamped into the rear of the right hand axle tube, they will be able to tell you what you have, unless it's been changed from stock.

Not to be rude in any fashion, but isn't the differentials considered to be part of the drivetrain?:)

P/L vs. T/L

The Powr-Lok is the better unit and it can be identified by the

"v" that the pinion shafts (spider shafts) ride in as opposed to

the round holes for the Trac-Lok. For 70 and smaller the T/L

is in a single piece case but the 80 T/L is built with a 2-piece

case and looks similar to a Powr-Lok.

Thanks for the info guys! Im right in the middle of an axle purchase, pulling the cover off tomorrow to make the deal, I need a quick way to ID the posi unit. I understand the powrloc and the tracloc look almost the same in a dana 80. Any small identifiers? This is a 98 unit. I tried to post this into the 12v / powertrain but it didnt take! HELP!
