When I make turns like going into a parking lot, I hear a growling noise from the truck. It leads me to believe that something's going out in the differential. It has 147,000 miles on it. If I have to get into the diff, what will it cost to replace the ratio with 3. 54 instead of the 4. 10s that I have now? What do I need to look for? Thanks.

If you have a limited slip axle, you might try to put some limited slip additive in the rear before you get out the BIG check book.

Dollars to donuts, thats what it needs.

I don't know if I have a limited slip, how can I check that? Any suggestions on an additive? What type of oil should the diff have? Thanks

take the vin into the dealership and ask them to look up whether you have the limited slip. If you do get two bottles of additive from the dealership for it.

Tes, it should say it on the window sticker, also, check the glovebox, if you have the option code sticker in there, it will say it there too.

mine had limited slip with 4:10's and wanted to go to 3:54's but last time i checked it would run me about $2500-$3000 :--) just in parts mind you mine is a 4x4 ya 4:10's are nice

I have 3. 54's and want to go to 4. 10's. I have had a few people offer to swap but they are either 2wd or want to trade whole axle assemblies which I don't mind but they dont have rear disc's. Wish someone close wanted to swap (or make a trip) hint hint :-laf

I change my diff fluid every 100K and add the appropriate addative. A guy in my four wheel drive club had the same problem, He said it was sounding like a Detroit locker in the back it made so much racket. The dealer had forgotten to add the friction modifyer the rear limited slip calls for. I think he gained quite a bit of gray hair in the amount of time it took to figure out that mishap. Hope you got it figured out.

Kendall brand anti-slip additive from Napa.

BEWARE: this stuff STINKS!! do not get it on your clothes or let the bottle sit inside of anything. usually, the guys at NAPA will wrap it in 3 or 4 bags to help seal the stink inside.

you may also still have the option sticker on the underside of the hood.

And YES !! the L/S additive is the smelliest stuff on earth !!

I was changing out the fluid on my 96' D80 w/3. 54's. I noticed lots of stray metal. Total cost for new R&P, carrier and adding limited slip to the original open diff was about $1600. After all that I sold the truck 3weeks later and still had to pay Visa on a truck I no longer owned.
