Tailshaft Housing Seal leak

Well here is the story.

While changing over to the mag-hytec cover I noticed some very large metal filings, looked like shaved chocolate attached to the magnet in the stock cover. To me it looks like shim material from the pinion and ring gears, or its shaving off entire faces of teeth from the gears in very thin strips. Now my question, its going in to the dealer this week for them to look at it, what should I expect them to do. Fix it, replace it, replace parts. If they infact just replace parts should they replace all bearings both innner and outer and pinion or shouldnt I worry about it? Also Should I reuse the oil or expect to purchase new. Thanks in advance for your input!!

I had a rear axle go out on my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee (bearing noise), and the only thing they knew how to do was to change the whole axle. It was convered under a 100,00 mile extended warranty so I didn't argue. I don't know if this was dealer policy, Jeep policy, or Chrysler policy.

Good luck

Well its at the dealer now with the carrier out and sure enough it spun out the shims between the carrier bearing and the ring gear carrier. The are replacing the bearings and (crossing my fingers) going to re-shim to within specs. The tec. said it had begun to spin the bearing and that is what took the shims out of commission. Has seen it quite a bit as of late. #ad

If ya havnt changed it in a while it may well be worth your time and $ to pull the cover and look for shims!!!!

However it looks like im out the amsoil I just put in and dont have enough on hand to put back for now, so I guess im going with stock synthetic for now.

Was your truck showing any symptoms? I know that mine chatters the tires when accelerating from a stop going into a turn on wet pavement. I have to sometimes let off the gas a little. Normal???

Challenger 2, Do you have a limited slip in the rear axle?

Why did the bearing start to spin? Did they check your housing and bearing cap for damage? I'd think if it spun once it may do it again.

I don't think your dealer is putting synthetic anything in your rear! as far as I know, factory is Dino Juice, with the recomendation to upgrade to synthetic of you tow a lot.

The truck developed a whine at freeway speeds while towing a 7000lb trailer, so I thought I better replace the fluid since it was time, that is when I noticed the problem, nothing wierd happened before. No warning just happened.

Well I now longer have to worry about this problematic truck bothering me anymore.

The following is a list of probs: #ad

pcm replaced (first week)
track bar replaced (2weeks ago 26000 miles)
new front axle seals (12000 miles)
ecm reflashed due to low power(1st month)
front end wander even after track bar replaced (continues to this day)
brakes pulling (to this day)
rotors warped (almost from first tow)
new center console (crappy hinge tabs)
rear end bearing shims (last week)
transmission now making funny noise and becoming hard to get in gear

I traded it in on a 2001. 5, see new sig!!

I also have a shimmy while turning, I think its the LSD working.

No slam intended, but this is a strange bunch. All those problems with a one year old truck, and you go out and buy another one! I hope that the $$$ damages wern't too bad. I noticed that none of the problems were engine related. What whould happen if Cummins bought Dodge?

No slam taken.
Alright I know you will not believe me but I traded straight across for the new one.
That is got new one for same payment plan as before, new one for 500 over invoice and got 27000 for the old one which I paid 500 over invoice for, took a hit for the 9 payments I made and a few for cost replaceable accessories, I kept the EZ, nerf bars and mag-hytec dana 80 cover, but reliability is worth that to me as many miles as I drive.
To me the power I had before (280hp/750ft/lb)was not worth the reliability issue, going to use the EZ but thats it after guages, thats my version of mild bombing, if it wont unplug it aint going on this one!!
