Okay, with the new cover in place is 7 1/2 quarts correct to fill the diff. with? just bought a case of Amsoil Series 2000 75/140 and if 7 1/2 quarts will fill the rear then I should have enough to do the front also..... Pete

That might be OK. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum1/HTML/002442.html
I pumped mine in from a 5gal pail so can't give a # from that.

Pete-
I believe that I was only able to put in 7 quarts to reach the full line. This was after completely draining the old and tilting the truck both ways to empty the axle tubes. I carefully measured the Mag Hytec dipstick to the stock level and it was very accurate. I have heard of people putting in the full 8-quarts. When you are up near the upper limits, not only are you filling the differential cover, but you are also filling the axle tubes, so I think that +/- a half-quart really does not show much difference on the dipstick. Start off with 7, do some figure 8's and then recheck and adjust accordingly.

I always add 8 qt to mine, and it still not at the full mark.

Still using the stock pan. I was gonna change the diff fluid to amsoil 2000 75w-90, as soon as my order comes it. My question is about draining out the old stuff and tilting the truck to get all the old out of there.

How much tilt is this? Like just get out the jack and crank it up a few inches or what. Other tips?

When the manual says it needs 4 qts, this is including the pan and the axles and everything right?

SlyBones-
I just lifted the truck a few inches like you say and let it drip each way for a few hours. Four quarts should include everything on the stock pan--the fluid should reach just below the fill hole on level ground.

Pete,

I just put one on. This is straight from Roy: if you have a 2WD then fill to the dip stick fill mark; if you have a 4WD then put in 8 qts. The reason to put in more is because the axle is rotated up to align the driveshaft. When the axle is rotated up, you need more fluid to get it to the proper level. After putting in 8 qts. and driving it for 20 miles or so, mark the dip stick for a "full" reference.

Let me rephrase that: this is what I remember Roy saying. Another reason to mark the dipstick is because when the axle is rotated, the dipstick rotates, relative to a 2WD, and the fill mark is no longer valid. Not exactly sure if 8 qts. will hit the fill mark on a 2WD, but I DO remember asking several times if I should put in 8 qts. , and Roy said yes each time.
