jlccc As the gear ratio goes up ( numericaly ) the pinion tooth count usaully gets smaller as does the overall diameter, so the ring gear has to move closer to the pinion to make contact. Instead of having a really thick ring gear the manufacture will use different series case's with the ring gear flange in different locations to optimize how much ring gear material is used. The metal for the gears are more expensive and are very high grade,it is cheaper to make multiple carriers and use less gear metal.
