This topic hasn't been discussed much here recently, so I thought I would start a new thread on the subject.

How many of you are using a dash cam in your personal vehicles? If you are, what brands are you using? I drive a lot of miles weekly and lately have had a few close calls with people pulling out in front of me or crossing the center line on that darn cell phone. I'm not necessarily a fan of recording everything you do on the road, but it is unfortunately getting to the point that it makes sense to have a "witness" riding along with you.

Not using one yet, but I'm ready to pull the trigger on one I see at Costco. It's a Cobra IIRC and takes a SD card.
I had a close call/ someone playing chicken on a busy secondary road near home. :eek::mad:#@$%!

Have you given any thought to GPS vs Non GPS enabled? *I can see the merit of having your location *stamped on the video, *but *not sure it is worth the extra cost. *

I don't think GPS is necessary. The visual landmarks I'd think is proof enough. You can't fudge an event on your main drag in front of Arby's, let's say. You'd see it plainly.

I bought El Cheapo Wal Mart closeouts....they come with the SD card and have the G Force camera stop that to me is a necessity.....I may upgrade at a later date but for now am happy with these...picked a a spare the other day for $15.00....

I have a Zetronix Black Box has micro card with 16gb, has GPS looks head as well at inside the vehicle, mounts to the center of the windshield cannot mount high as blocks the automatic wiper control, nice unit a bit complex in setting up. I looked at the Costco one appears to be junk in my opinion, both Garmin's had not too good reviews. The unit plugs in either lighter or USB port.

Question for those using cams now;

the way they are installed, will they boot and run when the vehicle is started? Will they stop on shutdown? Are they integrated with the vehicle, or do they need to be operated separately?

The one I currently use when Ram is started camera comes on telltale red light is on, shut the truck down, couple seconds camera goes off. There is battery in camera can remove from mount and use if in accident, want to take pictures, also can lock the recorded pictures so won't get erased. If you want to operate separately you may.

The one I ordered (http://www.amazon.com/KDLINKS-X1-Da...TF8&qid=1465087209&sr=8-1&keywords=kdlinks+x1) is on when it has power. If you plugged it into a cig lighter or USB charging port that has power when the ignition key is off, it would continue to record all the time, and overwrite previously unsaved video files. But if you power it from a port that is only energized when the key is on, it records only then. It too has a battery for still picture use while unplugged.

I hate to think we're becoming like Russian drivers where everyone has a dash cam. However, when it's a word against word on what happened, the dash cam doesn't lie.
