I have a 1994 Dodge 1 ton diesel, I am trying to get the dash off so I can get at the wiring, most of the wires relating to the lighting system are melted.

Can someone please explain to me how to get the top part of the dash off? The service manager at my local dealer tells me the whole complete dash, that is The Whole Complete Dash, comes out together. But it seems that the top portion where the defrost vents are should come out separately, I've taken all the screws and bolts out that are visible but can't seem to get it off, its gonna break.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I do have all the wires under the dash ripped down and the light switch out also. I'm trying to trace all the wires relating to lights, I have a major short somewhere.

And yes, this is an emergency.

Thanks in advance.

If it's an automatic transmission remove the little wire from the lever that indicates the gear shift lever position. It's on the side of the steering column.

Remove the nuts that support the steering column. Be careful of the ground wire.

Lower the steering column.

There are two large screws, one on each end of the dash assembly. Loosen them.

Remove the screws in the dash below the windshield.

You can now rotate the dash back toward the seat. This may be enuff to allow you to get at things.

I haven't had to go beyond this point (I had a heater duct problem), but I imagine that if you unplug all firewall connectors and remove the hinge screws you should be able to remove the whole business.
