Competition New personal best

Last year after the season ended, Greg Hogue kept telling me he couldn't believe we didn't use a data logger. Most of us know what they are and what they can tell us, but we were like many that said "we can get by without it".

Well, after many conversations, Greg suggested I call Randy McMahan of RPM performance which I finally did.

Darren purchased RPM's unit and installed it last month. Randy was available to help Darren with questions, remains available as questions come up, and has provided us with top notch support after he had been paid for his product.

The unit can be configured many different ways, from mild to wild with a fair price tag the whole way. And the end result is just incredible.

The system is providing us with cylinder temps, boost, staged boost, backpressure, rpm, ambient and intake temps, accelerometer and more. The software appears to be powerful, yet easy to use. Looking at the dyno run data and comparing to track data is working really well for providing us with even more confidence that what we develop at the shop will translate to 1/4 passes. I guess what I am saying is it appears to be telling us what we thought was happening but couldn't see it to know. It also told us some we didn't think was happening but was. ;)

I called and spoke to many companies before calling RPM. After my conversation with Randy, I knew he provided the best value for this tool out of everyone else I spoke with. If any of you guys are thinking about buying one , then a call to Randy at RPM Performance, 405-495-0454, will be well worth your time.

I was wondering why people havent done more with dataloggers on diesels. The other thing is I think with the newer 24v and HPCR electronics there could be some simple plug and play real time datalogging that would be awesome! We have been doing it with snowmobiles for a while and its so much easier to have every detail out on graphs when you have all the time in the world to look at and compare things that are going on with your truck, motor, drivetrain, sled or whatever.

we are working with competition dynamics and are really happy so far. ( phone is 317 401 4847) they are big with NTPA grand national competitors. I think the biggest thing holding back data systems is a reluctance to spend the money for the systems. I think this is one aspect where trucks are years behind the tractors and NHRA drag racers. They would not dream of running with out some sort of system to record data for troubleshooting and tuning purposes.

It is amazing what you can see with the data. Just make sure you get one with enough channels for what you want to record. We have already maxed out our 32 V-net channels in our Racepak system.

Randy’s Data logger is one of the best out there, and is expandable to any number of channels. What a lot of people don’t know about randy is he was the original builder of the AUTOMETER computer , before her sold it out to them, Randy understands diesels, and has one of his DL on a lot of the big pulling tractor, whether it’s a RPM or a AUTOMETER . Here is a neat channel he and I along with Brady from industrial injection worked out. This lets you monitored turbine speed.

I would recommend his computer on any application , its not that his is better , or cheaper , I feel its is the best , but it is the one on one service you get from him, ask him and he will get on a the next flight out if you need it

I talked to RPM welll over a year ago when they were first starting to get thier unit out thier. great people to work with and i will have one of thier systems when i go data. Just because they are a new company does not mean they have expierence. The owner of RPM was one of the designers of another very succesful system in the drag racing scene (autometer)

Great group to work with

HMMM, a little mag pickup. Out of curiosity, how many pulses per rev do you have that setup up for? He must have some pretty quick inputs to pick that signal up.

This is a good post you have here, I guess Greg is starting to get our attention here. He has been pinging on me to get with Randy for a long time now. I went by and talked to him last year but I had other areas that needed money and no Laptop to boot. Now with a new laptop there is nothing really holding me back. As a conversation that I was having Sunday, wouldn't it be cool for a vendor to send you a part to R&D and you could E-mail them the before and after runs of the graphs... ... ... think about it!

Hey give me a baseline of what you have... total boost, drive pressure, egt, cold pipe boost and temps as well as outside conditions. Make a change and do it all over again... ... real world. Do any of you know how hard it is to measure drive pressure with a gauge in one hand and a steering wheel in the other?

Jim

Yeah, Jim I do.

But, on the other hand. I'm not dealing with 873RWHP and 2 wheel drive stock suspension.

You better be careful on those narrow 2 lane Okie roads ;)

Randy's data logger is great, and the turbo speed sensor is a really cool option. Especially having it on both chargers and being able to map there speeds, boost pressures, drive pressures, and temps on overlaying maps so that you can further tune your setup.

Watching 3 boost guages (cold pipe,Pre-CIC,Post-CIC)

3 Drive pressure (2 manifold,1 hot pipe)

3 EGT guages (same as dp guages)

3 Air Temps (same as boost guages)

Its much easier just to watch 1 EGT, 1 Boost, RPM, Speed.

Those are enough to watch while blasting down the road at warp speed.

Not only does the data logger cover the 12 pressure and temp guages above but also.

It covers my RPM, Speed, TPS, and some more when need be.

Later,

Wes
