Hi guys, great sight. I am new to the sight and to the CTD. Got my truck in Feb. on my birthday. :D

Does any one have experience with the Car Chip Data recorder by(Davis instruments), and have you used it on your truck.

I tried it on mine, and when I plugged it in to the plug on the truck, all the gages went crazy.

Just thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone had experienced this.

Welcome

Lawnman,

Welcome to the group. There are a good number of VERY smart people in the group that are always willing to answer questions.

Also, if you plan to modify your truck, ask the group and somebody always has an install tip or warning.

The site is VERY informative and is a huge help.

Enjoy your truck and the site.

Lawnman,

Can you explain the data recorder? What does it track? I've never heard of it. Thanks, and welcome to the club.

Thanks for the welcomes! I can tell already this is a great site.

Yes APersondek, that is the link to the product I am talking about.

I have had it for a while. Used it on the wifes Durango, works great on there. But it kind of scared me when I plugged it in the truck. Didnt want to screw it up only being 2 months old. It is supposed to work on any OBD II system. Is that what our trucks are?

As far as i know our trucks use the OBDII protocol. I do know that the dealer service departments use a OBDIII scanning tool to update the ECM on 3gen trucks.

I remember finding this product like 1. 5 years ago and have since forgot about. now that i have had my truck for a little while i think i am going to call them up tomorrow and ask if they have tested it with any 3 gen trucks.

Davis Data Logger

Lawnman,

I had ordered that product from Davis and had almost exactly the same results. My gauges did not go crazy immediately. My truck an 03' I had tried it on a trip out to California and it seemed to be fine for about 3 hours then all my gauges dropped to nothing. Pulled over and shut the truck down started it up and everything seemed fine. 5 minutes down the road, same thing gauges drop to nothing and warning lights light up. Pulled over and shut the truck off and unplugged the Logger. Truck started right up and everything seemed fine. When I got back, had my dealer check for codes and it had set a communications code.

I called Davis and told them my truck year and model and they told me they could only guess that it was not compatible with the communication protocol on the truck. They told me I could return the product for a refund. Never did find out if they were able to make it compatible with our trucks or not.

If you guys do find out what they have to say, I would also be interested in what they have done.
