Obviously with your guidance, she will do good in whatever she chooses to do in life. Dont worry about it. Kinda sounds like the teacher is jealous of your daughter. JMO

high school is a bunch of fake B. S. imho. pretty pointless in my life at least. i went to diesel college for 3 months, love working on diesels, but absolutely hated the location, program, and people/staff.

i'm a certified engine nut (diesel performance is the biggest passion of my life), don't care much for normal contact sports. having a diesel performance shop, making lots of money is my dream, but then again (like joshpeters said) i don't want my hobby to simply turn into a dull job. now i have my own ceiling and wall cleaning and restoration business... go figure.

and yes, the whole idea of being brought up to HAVE to go to a 4 year college is a bunch of B. S. too imo. most college educated (i'm not talking doctors, lawyers, etc. ) only make maybe 35-40k per year after paying $50-$150k+ for college..... really worth it? Starting your own business is the only way to make real money, unless you're one of the rare ones who do "work your way" up the ladder.

in the end, do what makes you happy.

jponder > He was trying to humiliate the English major.

Not sure that I agree with you there. But I guess we'll agree to disagree.

jponder> He probably has no conception of how many English and History majors are running this country.

Being a master of a language doesn't necessarially qualify you to run a country. It allows you to speak well and get people to think you know what you are talking about. NOW don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that English majors aren't smart. But they're not ALL smart.

Personally I'm not real happy with the efficiency of our government, and if what you say is true, then perhaps we need less English majors in government.

But I think that the context of the teachers statement was that statistically, most english majors don't make alot of money. This is typically true.

jponder> I hope that girl gets her english degree and then a law degree and then a masters in ... ... and shows that Jacka$$ whats U

I 100% agree!

Teacher was way out of line

It is sad that quality of life is judged by how much money we make. I know people with a lot more money then I have, who are not as happy as I am. Being happy is very important, different things make the world go round. I personally think we all have too much stuff me include, but I feel trapped.

I firmly believe teachers should stick to teaching facts as best they can, trying to impose thier believes on students is a bad deal. I was lucky early on and relized that I needed to think for myself and not worry about what others thought. The fact of the matter is your daughter will encounter many others with thier own opinions in her life, might as well start learning how to deal with it now.

Example

Most teachers are union and have a slightly different view of unions and life than others with different expieriences might have. Most vote democratic based on thier union dealings. I don't want that twisted left wing crap taught to my kid :-laf :-{}

I am of the opinion that our kids would be better off if more teachers came from the "real world work" enviornment. Not all teachers mind you, I just think a good mix would be nice. There are many who can teach well who have no degree at all. I do think teachers are very important and should be paid well, at least the good teachers should... . but that goes against what the union is about doesn't it? (Pay based on merit)

Did his comments make your daughter think about what she was choosing as a major and the opportunities available to her afterwards, and why it was important to choose wisely? If so, even if that is what she still wants to do, then the teacher simply did his job. He got her to think about the choices she is making.

I think he was equally trying to help the other girl, by helping her to realize that bank loans are not based on trust, they are based on an ability to repay.

No matter how smart a high school student may be, they just cannot comprehend all the facets of everyday life once you are older, not because they are stupid, but because they haven't experienced it yet. I never knew what hitting my thumb with a hammer would feel like until I hit my thumb with a hammer!
