2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Daytime Running Light Question

Do the daytime running lights (Canadian Truck) use the same filament in the bulb as the normal head lights? I have a headlight out and as usual it works with the high beams (different filament) and it works when just the DRL are on but not when the headlights are on. I always thought the DRL was just the headlights at lower voltage but maybe it's the high beams at lower voltage.

On edit I guess the obvious answer is that the DRL is the high beams at a lower voltage, they must use the high beams so they are more noticeable during the day.

The DRL are controlled by the on board computer and can be either low beam or high beam based on how they were turned on... . The computer runs the DRL at about 40%. I have them turned on, on my car and trucks... but have problems with Geno's bright box... . and in fact have to reset my DRL from high to low beam...



The bulbs are standard 9007 bulbs in my 04, 04. 5 and 05...

I have a sport so mine has the two seperate bulbs and the DRL's use the low beam bulb in mine if that helps at all.

Thanks for the replies so high beams it is. Time for another set of Sylvania Silver Star bulbs. Last set (which was the first set) lasted about 2 years of almost daily driving. Funny that the normal headlight filament when first, I'd have thought the one that was on the DRL would be the first to go since it's on all day.

The DRL relay switch on and off the power to the highbeams in a rapid pace so the bulb see it as a 6v flow. Since the filaments run on a much lower volt they last much longer also.

How did you wire up the DRL's? I wnated to do that to mike when I got the truck but couldn't find a satisfactory way like ?I did on my 93. I ended up with foglights in the lower molding opening that are wired to come on thru my Painless Wiring box.

I didn't know there was a capibility or option for daylight running lights on these trucks. Is there something in my truck that would allow that (see signature)? or do I have to wire up a kit?

Not sure if it is just a computer activation on the newer rigs or not. Ours have a module that sits on the drivers side fender that controls the DRL's. They are about $135 cdn from dealer and they turn on the high beams at a lower voltage.

Depending on where your truck was made, there could be a harness plug for the drl module already there. Trucks made in Mexico, apparently do not have the plug. Check build place or check for harness plug. If there just mount drl moduke, plug in and voila, there you be.

That may be untrue as mine was built in Mexico and does have the plug/module. Maybe it was the ones built in Mexico and USA bound?

The way I had this explained to me is:



The DRL module supplies a ground to the headlights, BUT hooks them up in series, so the voltage is dropped from 12V to 6V during the daytime (headlights off)

When you turn on your headlights, the circuitry in the DRL Module looses this ground, and the ground is provided by the dash light switch and the individual head lights are back to a "normal" parallel connection each receiving 12 V each.



On the fender on my truck there is some sort of electrical component that is plugged in with the headlamp wire harness with each headlight. I have no idea what these are. I did install the upgrade "Summit Racing" harness with relays. This is an awsome and inexpensive upgrade ($35. 00 if memory serves). Silver Stars are even brighter now and the high current is not through the dash light switch. If anyone installs this harness, tell them that you have DRL because you need an extra plug for the passenger side headlight and two more relays. I do not have this extra harness so I think I am frying my DRL Module because it it buzzing and my daytime lights are very very bright.
