Has anyone retrofitted for day time running lights? My 96 3500 was bought off the lot so I did not have any choice on options though I have add a more than a few since then. I have checked the service manual and DRLs seem to be standard in Canada but not in the U. S. Does anyone know of any kits that are available? I have spoken with an electrical engineer friend of mine and he is going to put together a diagram for me to try for a fabrication project. Thanks, J Rowe

running lights are standard in canada . my 98. 5 has them . several years ago when they were not standard i bought a moudle with wiring harness in parts store. you could try napa. good luck. GOD bless america. :)

j rowe:

there currently is another thread running on this. i am currently adding dtrl's to my 01. 5. jcwhitney has a module which should "bolt on" to trucks up through 1999, i think. dc changed to a switched ground to work the headlights in 2000. that has caused me some grief. i now have rewired the headlights with relays, so have the 12v+ switched now. i picked up a pressure switch to pumb into the pressurized oil system, so that the lights will come on when pressure comes up. haven't got it done yet--still in progress. pm me if you want more particulars... .

Sport headlamps not only work better, but you get a free DRL. There is an unused filament in the inner bulb (the low beam) which I wired through a relay to come on whenever the engine is running.

They are very visible even from the side because of the reflector design.

Another relay disconnects the DRL filament whenever the normal outer lows are on.

In high beam you get all 4 high filaments on as usual.

Probably the best thing I ever bought for my truck were these Sport headlamps.

If the war gets worse we may all be driving with blackout lights, so I wouldn't put much effort into daytime lights now.

I never understood why people couldn't see in the daylight anyway. But if they really want to leave their lights on all day and waste fuel, just pull out on the switch.

I like the concept of lights on when rig is running. My understanding the day running lights use a lot less power than when the switch is on.

I just wish everyone would use their lights when evening comes rather than spot the shadows comming down the road and see it is someone without a clue.

Blakers,

I run with my lights on all the time. How much fuel do you think I am using up with the lights on? My last 12 tanks I have ave 21. 8.

DRL

finished 'em up tonite. quite a bit of rewiring, but rewarding. would have been easier, if DC hadn't gone to switched ground to control headlights. DRL are triggered by oil pressure, so don't come on til engine has started. that avoids the drain on the battery while grid heaters etc are on, before the engine is started.
