I finally made it to Canada on Friday to meet with Bill K. and Piers and was able to drop my turbo off at PDR. Piers was gracious enough to repair my once-perfect turbo and to send the compressor wheel off for failure analysis. From my discussions with Piers, we are not sure at this point what "I" have done to it! I am starting to suspect that I had some welding slag (even though I used shielding gas) or some type of foreign object in the cold-side piping let loose and perform its magic on the compressor wheel. I am starting to wonder why I chose to use my best HX35 (Piers Special) as my guinea pig primary turbo. Looking back on everything, I would have preferred to have destroyed my stock 35 and be currently driving around on Piers' 35. I really never realized how much of a difference there was between the two. Once I get the Piers' Special back in my possession, it will be installed directly into my 2001, for which I originally purchased it. At least I was able to enjoy three months of trouble-free boost before I decided to turn it into a rock crusher! I guess if one wants to play, one has to pay. Or is "I am my own warranty station" more appropriate?
I do have to commend Piers on his offer to repair the turbo immediately so that I could get it back on my truck, however, it wasn't necessary for him to jump through hoops as I will be indisposed over the next several weeks. Throughout my years of dealing with Piers, he has proven that he is top in customer service. This experience is further verification of that.
Piers, always one-upping someone, brought out his new toy turbo from Holset. What can a person say besides, "Wow" or is that "Wow, eh?" It should be very interesting once Piers has done some R/D. It looks to be a very promising avenue for him to pursue in his never-ending quest for more horsepower. Piers, one question I forgot to ask you, will this help clean up the smoke from the tailpipe? And I don't mean your definition of "it barely smokes"!
Thanks again for the hospitality and your offer to get things fixed right away.
I have put some more thought into what I can modify on the wastegate housing/exhaust housing to help lower backpressure, I just need to find some time to get in front of a milling machine to make the modifications. The first thing I need to do is check my welds in my cold-side piping for any wire or slag.
Well, off to e-bay to search for used HX35s. I'll get my twin turbo set-up trouble-free and functioning... even if it takes six, seven (heck, even eight!) tries!
By the way, if anyone needs to cross the border any time soon, bring your passport. The strip search was nothing like I've seen in the pay-per-view movies!
