I have been contemplating purchasing DCs extended warranty. Are they worth it? I have always been against buying extra warranty in the belief that the company is saying that their product is going to break. This truck is a little different in the respect that the fuel pump is a $2K bill.

The other thing is that I would like to have a black box on the truck for milage and or to feed my lead foot.

I would like to hear some pros and cons. I have been reading a few of the posts and I am kind of leary. Why spend $3600 if DC is not going to come through?

Thanks for the input.

Well, if you do buy a warranty make sure it's DC. . LOLOL There is a website, I can't remember the name of it but you can buy DC warranties online MUCH CHEAPER than a dealer. I always negotiate the extended warranty into my deal when I am buying the truck. I don't wait until I get to the finance manager for him/her to try and sell it to me. I get that worked out before it ever gets that far. I would say GO for it. . Like you said, it only takes one big repair and it pays for itself. I have never had to use one, ever so far but don't consider it a waste... Oo.

I own 3 trucks, one car and one jeep... . all 2003 and newer... . total mileage on them is over 500K miles with one 04 dually at 240K miles... the total cost to keep them up, except for one transmission on the 04, (pulls a 22K lb trailer) would not pay for 1 extended warranty on one of them... .

Did I say that right... . we're not counting tires, lube oil change etc... but those things that would be covered under that type of warranty... .

Now with my Goldwing I was able to purchase a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty extension from Honda for 250 bucks... . the motorcycle came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty..... so for the 250 bucks I got a 6 year unlimited mileage warranty... that was a good deal... .

Just my thoughts...

If you don't use your Chrysler extended warranty, you can get your money back by asking for it within something like 90 days. Check the details on that web site I mentioned above.

Extended warranties are SOLD. They sell them to make money, not as a favor. The companies analyze the statistics carefully and sell the policies at a price that will make money. If you have average warranty problems, you are guaranteed to lose money on the purchase. They know what they are doing.

Another issue is financing anything, especially an extended warrantee for 5-7 years. The real costs are much more than you first think. It is just one more way to get upside down on a loan.

So you want an extended warrantee AND also want to put a warrantee voiding performance box on the truck... . something seem a bit out of whack here. Maybe it's just me.

I got roped in, and wish I hadn't, that extra 2k could have bought me a aftermarket TC & VB. They started at 3k, but I blew him off until he kept lowering it till 2200, then I said no, afterwards in the parking lot while I am putting my toolbox in the new truck, he says 2k and he'll throw in a rim & tire warranty, and I did it. Hindsight is always 20/20, because the way it's lookin I am not gonna need the warranty at all for the first 100k, and I don't want to mod my transmission since that would probably void the warranty.

A friend of mine later said I should not have bought the warranty because there are aftermarket warranty companies that sell warranties for new cars, and you can have the work done wherever you want I. E. diesel performance shop. Then your not stuck dealing with the DC service guy trying to get out of doing work or void your warranty. I don't know of the companies that do this but maybe someone here does.

As I said, if you don't use your extended warranty, you can get your money back. If you financed the warranty, then all you're out is the interest you paid on it and taxes.

Extended Warranty

DC sent me a flyer and I am sure some of you out there with late models received them as well. The flyer stated:Up to 7 yrs/100K MI $3655 for 101. 52 interest free. You have up to 60 days to reverse your decision and get a full refund. $1K trip interruption, nationwide coverage, transferable coverage, first day rental allowance, $100 "Sign-and-go". Good until 7/20/07.

I am still undecided.

I've been buying life insurance for about thirty years now, and have never needed it, so am I being ripped off? The extended warranty is for piece of mind. They sell them to keep satisfied customers and to make money, just like every other consumer commodity. And yes, just like life insurance, and car insurance, and medical insurance, they have a bunch of smart folks with actuarial tables that stack the deck in their favor. So some people will win, and some will loose. I hope I loose for many more years on my life insurance, but somehow I think my wife is betting she will win!

Buy it if you don't want to worry about future repairs, but if you do, buy the manufacturers warranty. Many of the aftermarket warranties are not worth what you pay for them.

It is a very personal purchase, so don't let anyone make you feel bad for purchasing or not purchasing. I'm different than you, and what scares the pants off me may be just another fun adventure for the next guy.

I have never purchased one on a vehicle I bought new. I generally don't buy them on used cars either. I did buy one this time on the '06 QC. It isn't the DC version, but sold by the dealer that is going to do the work. My truck has over 70k miles on it, and was clearly worked. I know it was running hotshot in the oil fields. I paid $1700 for pretty complete coverage 24/24,000. Next week when the parts come in I am getting new ball joints (4), a complete driveshaft assembly, and a rear power window regulator replaced all for the $100 deductible;)

If you have had good luck so far, and take good care of the truck I wouldn't bother. In my case I suspected that some refurbishing may be necessary:-laf and was pretty sure I would get my moneys worth. Always haggle on the price, I got mine down by half before I agreed to buy it.

I purchased an extended warranty from the dealer at the time I bought my truck. Just recently I had to do ball joints on my truck, (just out of factory warranty) With my extended warranty I only had to pay the $100 deductable and the work was done. W/o the extended It would have cost about 1k for the work (uppers and lowers both sides). The warranty more or less paid for itself right there.

I say if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time the extended warranty is worth it.

My extended was about 2k less than what the dealer is wanting. I would talk them down ALOT before I would purchase

I have alway believed in not buying the extended warranty. I have never purchased it for any of the Toyota's I purchased new because they are Toyota. Having said that, I think it is now necessary with all the electronics on these vehicles. If one of your power windows goes out, $500. 00. The secret to buying extended warranty is that it is highly negotiable. I got it on my 05 for half price and they threw in the free oil changes for 7 years at two per year. It's like buying any other insurance. You hope you never have to use it, but if you have to use it, you'd be glad you have it.

If you're going to mod the truck don't get it.

If you don't like going to the dealer don't get it.

If you like your truck stock and you like having your repairs done at the dealership and you can get a good price on it, then get it.

For myself, if I can have an in-warranty repair done at the shop of my choice for less than $200, I'll pay to have it done just to avoid the hassle of going to the dealership. I also like mods. Warranties are not for me.

The best time to buy extended warranty is at the time you purchase the vehicle. That's when you have the best negotiating advantage. Extended warranty's have a very high mark-up.
