DaimlerChrysler To Continue Using Cummins; Still Interested In Detroit
Diesel?
Industry scuttlebutt that DaimlerChrysler would dump Cummins diesels in
favor of Mercedes-Benz diesels for the Dodge Ram pickup is apparently
wrong. The Wall Street Journal reports that DaimlerChrysler Co-chairman
Robert J. Eaton said it does not plan to replace Cummins in the popular
pickup truck. And, in almost an aside, a DaimlerChrysler official said
the company was considering acquiring Detroit Diesel.

In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Eaton said it was the
company’s long-term plan to keep Cummins in heavy-duty Ram pickups.
Eaton’s comments were supported by DaimlerChrysler North America
President Jim Holden and Juergen Hubert a member of DaimlerChrysler’s
board of management.

“My vehicle and their engine are made to go together,” Holden said.
“Mercedes makes a truck engine that could go into the Ram, but it just
wouldn’t make sense in this particular market segment. For years, those
engines sold our trucks. ” Cummins has said that DaimlerChrysler is its
largest customer accounting for about 18 percent of the company’s $6. 3
billion in revenue.

Hubert said that DaimlerChrysler wants to increase the number of
Mercedes-Benz diesels used by Freightliner. He also added that the
company was “also continuing discussions with Penske about acquiring
Detroit Diesel. ”

Bless you Mr. Holden. You are an admirable man in our house as well as many others I'm sure. I bought a Dodge/Cummins in '95 for the Cummins engine. It lead to our decision to buy a Neon Sport Coupe for my wife, a Dakota p/u for our son, another Dodge Cummins p/u for myself, a Dodge Stratus for my wife with the Neon going to mom. Now a new Durango has my wife's attention as a next vehicle. It all started with the Cummins engine in a Dodge. Will it ever end? I certainly hope not...

Ditto on the Cummins helping sell more than Dodge pickups.

The wife's Durango for example... 98 SLT Patriot Blue 360 cubic inches. Soon to be "Shleby'd" -- my summer project. Blower, jacobs HO ignition, headers, dual pipes, ram air. Yee Hah!

A Neon with a Cummins? I didn't know it was an option! I didn't give Chrysler products a second glance until I saw the first Dodge Cummins in our neighborhood sometime in 1989. I wanted one then but couldn't afford one until 1995. Contrary to what folks say on the Fraud site, we've had excellent service from our Mopar units. And giving credit where credit is due, Cummins got me back into Chrysler.

detroit diesel is owned by rodger penski(sp)
which was financed by GE which was a big holder of the paper from GM back in the day's when DETROIT D sank down to 2-3 % share of the big rig market with there silver 92's. the old 2 stroke's were thrown out by little wife's complaining of the massive oil leak spots on the drive of the 100k+ house back in the early 90's
GM KNEW there were in trouble and so did GE so gm dumped the eng and GE needed a new image redesign to 4 stroke was all ready in the works, with the hireing of a cummins and a deal with JD enginering they needed a face to give it credit--RODGER P. re did the paper ,and detroit diesel is still alive and i being a lover of the CUMMINS --D. D. is a hell of an eng.
in the case of the sale of D. D. WOULD NOT SUPPRISE ME if Rodger takes his $$$$$$ and run's.
