Ford & Navistar parting ways?

Ford's Stock Market rating

Detnews.com had and artical to bring diesels to the US market. In the european market. The PT cruiser is using 2. 2L CRD, voyager 2. 5L TURBO CRD, Cherokee/Liberty and grand cherokee 2. 7CRD. All mercedes motors. daimlerchrysler to test diesel cars in US market

I say it's about time to bring diesel to dodge, chrysler, jeep vehicals in the US market.

My question is that they own detroit diesel. What chrysler, dodge, jeep vehical has a detroit diesel power plant?

If DCX brings diesels to the US market of cars and vans. I assume it will be mercedes motors.

Mersedes is buying out mitsubishi Fuso to install mercedes motors in thier truck. Large and small.

So why should they bother with detroit diesel if they cater to other manufactures. When dodge will have cummins, mercedes motors. Chrysler & jeep mercedes diesels.

Hyundai is looking into technology of making diesel motors. Then hyundai mitsubishi DCX will have joint 1. 8L 2. 0L 2. 4L gas motors. I wonder what the future will bring for diesel motors. Will Mercedes sell diesel motors to hyundai?

why not Detroit Diesel

I think the reason you won't see Detroit Diesel is that they can't (or won't) meet the emissions technology. I don't know what the future is for that company, if they don't get with the program.

... . which is a strange thing, Ray. As Detroit was collapsing, Roger Penske stepped in and wrote a check to save the company. He wiped the slate clean and started over with fresh racing technology... . in the early 80's they introduced to the diesel world: twin cams, 4-valve heads, electronic engine management systems, etc... and the rest of the world was playing catch-up!! Those motors delivered power AND incredible mileage that large trucking firms needed. Now it seems, the European diesel technology is on the top of the heap, and we're playing catch-up. Just a few years ago, I paid just over $4. 00/gal for diesel in Germany... it was a Circle K-type place and cheaper than other stations... if mid-east war is in our future, we may see prices like that and 50+mpg vehicles will be all the rage.

If DCX owns detroit diesel. Why don't they treat that company like they treat Chrysler and Mitsubishi. By generating a joint engine that meets US/ canada pollution rules. Then use the 1. 7L to 4. 0L diesels in small and mid size vehicals for the world wide market. To be used in Chrysler, dodge, jeep, mercedes, mitsubishi, hyundai vehicals.

If they do not plan on ever using a detroit diesel in a DCX vehical. Why not sell the company to GM or ford. I think they use detroit diesels in other countries.

DCX already makes diesels for TJ, KJ, etc... They only sell them overseas as the steering columns are right hand drive units.

I found out that the 2. 5L is a VM (part of detriot diesel). From the allpar.com forum sight. As far as cherokee and grand chrokee. The english sight shows they use the MB 2. 7L CRD 5cly.

2. 5L offered in the Liberty/cherokee and minivan/voyager.

I guess I haven't visited enough countries to see a diesel in the wrangler.

Looks like most auto manufactures will wait till 2005-2006 before installing diesels into thier US vehicals. Sulfer will be less by then in our diesel fuel. Too bad cummins doesn't offer the 3. 9L 4cly for the dakota, liberty, wrangler, grand cherokee. Providing the 3. 9 can be as clean & quiet as the 2003 5. 9L. Looking at the cummins construction page. The B3. 9 comes in 6 levels. 77hp 192 lb-ft to 130hp 333 lb-ft. I think the 130HP would be good in the wrangler rubicon, grand cherokee and future newyorker/concord. 110hp 293lb-ft or 116hp 300lb-ft would be good for the dakota, liberty, wrangler.

Interesting fact

I learned this week that the new large van to built in one of the Carolinas will be powered by a five cylinder MB turbodiesel engine. They already have large orders from a U. S freight operation which must remain un-named. I'd say D. C is about to promote and offer diesels in more vehicles soon.

detnews.com sprinter and vito vans to be made in georgia

Reading this artical. Pre made sprinter vans for freightliner is assembled in Gaffney SC. Which FedEx buys.

Sprinter for dodge is going to Pooler Georgia (close to savannah georgia) Along with the vito mini van. It's not clear to me if the vito is going to be MB sold or is it going to replace the Chrysler voyager. It will generate 3000 jobs in pooler.

I assume the diesel 5 cyl is the 2. 7L for the vans.

I went to the jeep dealership sight. Clicked on world wide. I visited the UK, brazil, australia. I thought one of those places would show a diesel offered for the wrangler. Nope. All 4. 0L 2002. They may have offered diesels in the wrangler in past years. Maybe in the AMC years. But not for the 2002.

General Motors owned Detroit Diesel before it was sold to Penske. GM diesels and Detroit Diesels were one in the same. I'm sure they had 4-valve heads back in the 50s if not in the 40s or 30s.

EMD, another branch of GM still builds practically the same engines now, only in large sizes for locomotives, oil rigs and stationary use.

Oh the wonder of the 2-cycle diesel engine! One thing... they sure stink and most have very little torque compared to a Cummins.

Years ago I was going to put a 200D Benz engine in a CJ-2A. It would have been fun, but the oil pan hangs so low on the diesel that it would be hard to make it clear the front differential.

That's funny - We make steering shafts for current year production right hand drive diesels. TJ, WJ, KJ, WG, etc. . Maybe DC just doesn't have them listed on the web??
