OK... . Just when I thought I was done for a while I'm thinking harder & harder about trying to resolve some of my EGT concerns. I know 1100 isn't that hot, but I haven't hit the passes yet...

My question is... Is the PDR HX35 using my stock 12cm Exhaust Housing going to lower my EGT's 100-200 degrees while pulling or is something different (Larger) going to be required? Will I need to get the 14cm housing combined with the PDR HX35 to get the max benefit (100-200 reduction)??

Right now it's all conjecture but I'm assuming the worst & I will have to pull my 5vr like I have an egg under the go pedal. I have decided I will unplug the DATA connection so the EZ will be a "Boost Fooler" only while towing.

What do you guys think?

Snow man-

Read my sig! I just added the 4" exhaust & AFE prior to installing the 2's. I can get into the 1200's if I don't back out of it. I'm thinking I need to do a turbo upgrade. Any suggestions in that area?

whats wrong with 1200? its safe My Dad has been towing for 3 yrs now with an HY35 stock exhaust, and a BHAF,he keeps it at 1300 and stil can go 70 up any hill we from here down I81 /77 to fla. he tows as much as 10000 in a 24x8 enclosed

I agree with Snow... ... . 1250 all day long. A PDR 35 with 14 would be the best bet to get the reduction you are looking for. BTW, how do you have a 12cm housing when the stock turbo is a HY-35 with a 9cm housing?

Chipstien,

The 99 Autos with the 215 HP Cummins came with the HX 35 12cm housing. I'm just looking for a safety margin on the EGT's. If I have a problem with my pyro it would be nice to have some type of safety net on EGT temps. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

For the price of Piers HX-35 with 14 w/wastegate, go ahead an get his HX-40. I'd consider selling the EZ and getting a Comp(DD UFM) and having the best of all situations.

This is almost standard issue for ones I build to match what you're asking to do, including the DTT transmission, which you already have.

Oops, my bad. :) What you would gain from switching to the PDR 35 and keeping the stock housing would be negligible. Remember that one of the things that Piers mods is the ex housing. If all you are looking for is a little reduction in EGT's then why not just get a 14 housing and put it on your turbo. Half the cost of a new turbo and if and when the turbogoes out you would not need to buy the housing. All you would need is the compresser and the cartridge. And the plus to this is if you do not get the reductions you are looking for then you are not out a whole turbo, just the housing. Then you can go the route as Fred suggest and step into a PDR-40 without second guessing whether you should have got the PDR-35/14. My 2 cents worth. :)

Similiar question here as I hadn't even pondered upgrading my turbo until recently. With my K & N, 4" exhaust, and the rest stock, I can get the turbo to stall, or whatever you call it, when I get on the power and then back off it quickly. EGT's are fine still, but I didn't expect this to happen this soon. My DD 2's and Comp box are going in this week, so I'm expecting it to get worse, or am I wrong?

This "Quick Spool" mod has my attention though. How much quicker is it really or is it just a cool name???

What you are talking about is "barking" the turbo. Though you can lessen it by going to a larger housing it is best to avoid cutting the throttle sharply. Just taking a second longer to let off makes all the difference in the world. :)

With my mods (EZ, DD2's, BHAF & 4" exhaust), the most I've seen towing our 13,500 lb 5th wheel this spring/summer (90+ ambients) in the Texas Hill Country is 1250 degF @ 34 PSIG boost. That doesn't worry me - the HO would hit 1300 degF @ 21 PSIG boost stock!

If I unplug the EZ's CANbus connector, I see about 1100 degF @ 30 PSIG while towing.

These temps are perfectly acceptable, IMHO.

LONG REPLY... ... .

Doug,

I'm actually running my stock injectors. I loved the dd2's but right now I don't have the $$ to upgrade my turbo & the heat I experienced took away from "useable power" so for me the stock injectors are working better.

I know many people thar run larger injectors (above stock) but while towing, dd2's without a turbo upgrade just weren't working out for me. Maybe others don't have the mountainous passes & hills, or perhaps they feel more comfortable with the heat, but if I can only pull using the top 1\4 of my pedal & am at a constant stare with my pyro to keep it at 1100-1150 it just doesn't work. I may run 275's since they seem to run cooler or maybe even DD1's so I can avoid having to upgrade my turbo right now.

The next "BOMB" I do will be the DTT Smart Controller" ! With the auto trans,3. 54 gears, & 285 tires I can pretty much only pull in one gear (to achieve lock-up) & thats another reason I have problems with the heat of the II's. In "drive" I can't keep my boost up on steep, curving roads.....

I'm rambling so I'll stop. If you have a stick I say go for it, if you have 4. 10s & an auto I would say go for it, but 3. 5s & an auto... ... I dunno know!

Good luck,

Clay

I don't know how much those 285's are affecting the towing performance of your truck but they sure can't be helping. An automatic with 3. 54's seems the most challenging combo to tow with. In effect your gear ratios are even taller with those tires. I wonder if you went back to the 235's if you would be able to improve the situation? I know... it wouldn't look as cool... just a thought. AC

Don't do anything until you go drive it with the 2's and EZ pulling the trailer. Maybe you have a concern and have to slow down a bit, and maybe you don't, but you surely don't know.

Try it before you spend more money.

200* margin

At 1100* you have a 200* margin below the max 1300* number, read the above post about a STOCK HO running 1300*. This is normal for most HO's, so your 1100* is way cooler than a stock truck.

I certainly wouldn't worry about 1100* continious. Think about all the stock trucks running WOT without gauges pulling heavy loads!!

DD2's and an EZ should be fine for your weight. I agree with the above post about the 285's though, why create a taller gear ratio for pulling?? If you can use stock height tires for pulling.

Hope this helps, Greg L

Pulling my trailer with the DD2s 1200 at WOT was the hottest I ever saw. At a even cruise of 70mph 900 degrees. I have done turbo upgrde and can get 36 to 38 pounds of boost. It will be intresting to see what the EGTs will be at when I head out west this year, then I might become nervous.

If you are really worried about EGT's then go with a B1 series turbo. Just keep in mind it will have lots more boost so you may strain the head gasket instead. If you stay below 1200 you should have no worries. BTW I can hit 1400 in no time flat with the blue box on the 40% setting.
