Competition Raced a chubby!

not to pee on the DD parade....

Briar,

I wanted to say something about Dave Mitichell, but didn't want to pee on the DD parade. This guy has done all the R&D too, had them for a while too I think. Anybody got some idea of the price for a Mitichellized Cam?

Andrew

27 hrs is BS!!!! I watched it done in under 5 hrs. YUP, DD's cam installed in under 5 hrs on a 2002 2500 4x4 qc. Then I went for a ride, it had an hx40 on it and it spooled up about the same as a stock truck with a 35. It had an 89% converter, and this was at 4500 feet.

Would I buy one if they cost less?

Yes, but it would have to be about half as much.

That leaves $700 for the cam, and $100/hr for labor.

Go and price a marine cam and new gear, the bolt that holds the gear to the cam, the key, gaskets, etc.

Add the labor to do the work and dont forget the R&D that went into it.

These guys did 18 different cam changes. Go change your cam out 18 times and pay for master camshafts to be made to grind the new ones by.

Get all this together and prove your results with a dyno and street driving. Add in the fact the fuel mileage will go up and the dern thing is a steal. It will pay for itself in fuel savings. This alone is enough to wanna make me buy one. Lets not forget you can spool a fat turbo up like a little bity HX35 and the EGT's will drop.

You aint gotta do jack except drive to Vegas and watch/wait while others pull the thing out and replace it. Picking up a service manual and looking at the cam change illustrations/directions is enough to see it aint no fun job and requires some special tools as well.

Its a steal in my book. I could never sell one for that kinda money after all that work. Besides who is selling one that gives better fuel economy?

Don~

I under stand the R&D costs $$$. I don't mind paying for the parts. I do mind being told that I must pay one of their installers to put it in because they want to protect their product and that if anyone wants to copy it they'll have to take it out of their truck.

I could care less about copying it. I will not pay for labor. My labor is free.

$2500 for JUST a camshaft installed is still robbery.

I'm debating between ported head... . or a camshaft come May Madness time. I would like the injection pump... but they ain't for sale yet, they are doing long term testing on it.

Hmmm if the B1 spools up fast already to begin with... ... ... . does that mean the cam will spool it up even quicker? Hmmmm..... and a gain in fuel milage. Hmmm The choice is getting easier and easier considering I can prolly talk them into shipping a ported head at a later date.

TXDieselKid, my information on the cams at Enterprise Engine is strictly secondhand. Maybe others that have one of their cams will see this thread and post here. Of course, you're welcome to call and ask for price and details. I'm not in the market for one, right now, so I see no need for me to call. I'll ask next time I'm up there on a visit.

Not peeing on anybody's parade here, just pointing out that there are excellent alternatives to most any product that gets a lot of publicity in these forums. One merely has to shop around.

Also, Enterprise and DD are not the only shops out there offering extreme performance.

We all have our favorites.

Haha, that's what I thought when I called the Dodge shop. Book rate is rediculous! I didn't say that's what it took us to do it. :D

Go add up a 3 MPG fuel savings over about 50,000 miles.

Price all the parts from Cummins.

Add in the labor to install the cam

Add in R&D time

Add up 18 different cam changes and regrinds

Add up the cost to make master camshafts

Its a smokin deal!!!!

Don~

anyone know the cost of a stock marine cam and gear alone?

It will scare you.

Mitchell actually has been putting out cams before DD started advertising theirs. They are not advertised because Dave is always trying a new grind and he gets them built according to what you want. He can regrind the old cam for around $500 or the last time we talked he was getting ready to test a new custom billet cam that was somewhere in the $1000 range. If you get your old cam redone, you have to get refaced lifters and you really need to get heavier valvesprings. You can get everything from him for just a little over $1000 and install it yourself. Prices may have changed by now, I'm not sure. If you're a little bit tighter with your money, you can go out and do your own R&D and come up with cheaper valvesprings.

On the other hand, I was talking with Reed Cams last night about regrinding a JD two cylinder cam and I asked him about doing a cam for our trucks. He said he has already done some of them. $350 for a regrind. If you get lobes welded up it is $100 for each lobe.

There are many options out there. You just have to look for them.

Choose your options wisely. That's why I chose the one I did. It delivered Exactly as advertised. I know what went into making this final product, and am very impressed with it.

Ask Greg Boardman later tonight how much different it is. He has driven my truck before the cam, and will drive it after the cam.

Holy Cow CamMan, This thing is night and day. I have seen the light at the end of the dark side. This cam does just what it is advertised to do. It was kicking in hard, 1400 or so rpms. I got a permagrin... ... Smiled for about 40 miles on the way home. Thanks Fred... . That truck is so fast off the bottem, kinda, maybe just maybe felt like my old 440 duster. Just pulled and pulled. Started low and never, I mean never, stopped pulling. This guy is a maniac. How about a little NO2. that is next ... ... I can't even get my DDII's and trany for another month... ..... Wife gave the go ahead on the upgrade Fred..... It has just begun..... Greg
