I tried a heat gun but was afraid of screwing something up. WD-40 didn't seem to help much. Just want to help get it loose without removing paint. Just looking at a tailgate clean-up.
Don't go eating the truck after this is applied but try mayo for some of the stickem. It works on bottle labels and such (didn't believe it either till I tried it ). The SO has showen me the light !! It just might work on some of the glue and you probably have some around to try.

She also has others but his one she MADE me try so I remember that it works, even when WD40 didn't. Was ready to try the carb cleaner trick when she handed me the Mayo (and thats not the clinic).
Some body repair shops might sell you what some painters call an eraser. It is a rubber wheel on an arbor that goes on your drill. It won't damage the paint and removes the adhesive quickly.
Thanks everybody, I got it. Some really tough stuff under those chrome goodies. :{ I couldn't find my Goof Off, but I had acetone on the shelf. It turned it to goo, and with enough fresh towels, it finally parted from my tailgate.
It seemed like just a bit too much lettering on the back. Now I've got a nice, clean, smooooth tailgate now.
