Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) dead batts

Hey guys,

I have a friend who owns a '95 12 valve and he just recently put new batteries in it(last week) He hasn't driven it much since the and when he went out to start it this morning, both batts dead. When he had them tested, the posts were actually opposite of what they should have been on one of them. Replaced this battery with different brtand, and now they are both dead. They apparently didn't check to see if both batts posts were reversed. Would the 2nd batts posts being reversed cause them to go dead? If not, anyone know why they would go dead in a week?

I have only heard of it one time, but If a battery goes extremely dead, and is charged in reverse... it'll be reversed.



As far as it going dead... I'd look for a parasitic drain. Something is not shutting off... . glove box light... hood light... etc.

It 's prettyhard to batteries in wrong way the post face toward engine compartment on both sides. Cables are red and black like they are suppopsed to be. Plus or minus sign in front of battery post.



I have seen on alternators with built in regulators that when regulator was almost gone it would send current(aprox. 12 volts) to negative side of battery.



On my Buick when the side terminals start to get corroded I would get 2 to 4 volt reading off the negative post.

The batteries were not in backwards. Nor were they drained and recharged. The batts were brand new, and when tested the negative post read positive, and vice versa.

I would think that reverse connected batteries would take out the alternator diodes or, if one battery was improperly marked and the other was correctly marked there would be some fireworks when they were connected together.

Either way, you may have some electronic components in the truck that have been destroyed.

Document any damage done and then go to the battery manufacturer for compensation.



Put one new, tested, battery in and see if everything or anything works.



You can tell if anything is shorted when you connect the second wire to the battery. Make sure everything is turned off before touching the cable to the post. If it sparks something is wrong.
