Hi Guy's I have a 1998. 5 24 valve with two dead cylinders.

Scratched walls and low compression. The question is are these engines to be bored and sleeved or just bored to the next oversize. I can find a used engine but I'm known to be cheap. I do my own wrenching and the engine is already out.

Thanks, Mark Hill

They can be bored and if bad enough sleeved but be sure to find the cause or it will happen again. Are the piston cooling jets open?

I have always heard the block can be sleeved, but have never seen it done. In a warranty situation, Cummins replaces the block with a new one.

Good Luck,

Charlie

Thank's TMTT. Wish I'd got a bid in on that fresh Block. The complete engines are worth looking into. Thank's to all that replied also. Anyone know somebody that's been through the rebuild process themselves.

I rebuilt my 91 Cummins, & a couple of things I did and others I would do differently.

1st had mine balanced, there is a huge weight difference from cylinder to cylinder. This buys you a smoother engine at higher RPMs and I believe it can add to the engine life as well.

2nd, Mild porting of the head helps too, but it can be expensive to have done. And of course get one of Pier's cams. On the Crank shaft, avoid having it ground, the cranks is hardened, and will need to be retreated if ground. I stayed with all Cummins parts for my rebuild, the engine had 730,000 miles on it before I tore it down, the crank was perfect, look like new, and the worst cylinder taper was 28 thousandths. As for the valve train, it was completely shot, cam all the valves, seats, guides were completely wiped out.

Building a Cummins is not cheap, but if you are going to keep it, its the only way to fly and you can add some toys like a cam upgrade along the way :D .
