was pulling away from a stop light tonight towing a 7000 lb trailer. Truck is a stock 98 daully with a 5 speed manual. Shifted into second and it semmed like nutral with a grinding sound comming from what seemed to be the bell housing area. Quickly stopped ,no noises in nutral,but the truck wont move in any gear including reverse. Makes a loud grinding sound as soon as clutch tries to ingadge a little. Is the clutch or trany fried? Clutch has never slipped. I just got the truck a month ago so I dont know its history, transmision has always shifted well and seemed happy. The previous owner said he just had new hydrolics put in the clutch. I crawed under it tonight and the hydrolic part that goes into the bellhousing to me looks like a low quality plasic POS. But Iv never seen one before tonight on a CTD. Anyone have a clue as to whats wrong before I take it to the dealer to get ripped? thanks Otis :-{}

I think your probly right. So whats the next move ,?drop the trans? probly a good time to do a new clutch,Where is a good place to get a new input shaft for towing? whats a ballpark figure for a shaft, Thanks Otis

otis

Don't jump to conclusions, it could very well be the clutch, I just had the center

come apart in mine and it would not shift, that is what tiped me off.

Bottom line is you are going to have to pull the trans and fine the trouble.

You want to do the cluch either way with the trans out.

Check out Dan at Quad 4x4 he did mine and has the fix for 5th gear too.

A family member lost all gears while going down the road empty. Turns out the clutch should've been changed some time ago. The flywheel is now toast.

Otis, where do you live and is your truck 4WD? I have a 5 speed in my garage that might help you out if you are near here.

I live near Grand Rapids MI , thanks for your offer but I called south bend clutch today and they think I ripped the center out of the clutch. They are probably right. Im going to pull the trans and clutch and r/r it with the 13 inch they offer. It should be a good one as it cost about 300 bux more than the clutch I had put in my 96 international class 8 with a 470 Detriot and a 9 speed. Thanks Otis

finally got the trans and clutch out. Most of the bolts on this project have been tighter than any I have ever ran into. Iv never seen such small bolts be almost corrosion free and so fricking tight. The crossmember bolts took about a 3 foot bar and all the force I could muster to break them loose. The bolts appear to be very high quality. Didnt twist or round anthing off. The flywheel bolts came off the easest. They seemed about normal. I will be going to SBC tommorow for a new clutch and a driveline shop for new U joints and carrier berring.

nope not the clutch. It was just thin ,wasnt slipping. I have the trans at the shop now . Should know something tomorrow. I pulled the rear end cover and axle shafts ,nothing wrong there.
