Dead key this morning after startup..........SOLVED

Started the truck normally this morning, drove to the store for milk, pulled back into the driveway to give Momma the milk and as I came to a stop and threw it in Park, it DIED - with the key still on... ... ... .....

Tried to restart, NO info center information came up (no wait to start light, etc) but seatbelt dinger works.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Figure someone has had this happen to them on here.

Thanks in advance. :(

TURNS OUT IT WAS, AS SUGGESTED ABOVE, A WIRE THAT BROKE IN THE STEERING COLUMN/SWITCH AREA. GREAT DESIGN IT APPEARS... ... ... ... .....

Thanks, gonna go try that... ... ... ..... keep ideas coming gents.

:D

I had this happen to me, and had no radio, windshield wipers, no guages on insturment panel etc...

It was caused by a blown fuse I think it is called the engine run fuse, any it is the 50 amp fuse, middle row third from end counting from the engine side of fuse box under the hood. This fuse was blown because a wire I had run to my pillar guages was shorted to something next to the emergency brake and brake release lever.

Hope this helps.

If you can't find it, take off the bottom cover of the steering wheel (the cover below the ignition key) A friend had a loose wire there on his 2001 that would loose contact if he tilted the wheel up. Maybe putting it in park is doing the same thing. The truck was dead like you described when this happened.

Mine died right after jumping on it to about medium throttle then letting off fast to make a turn, it died while I was turning. I attempted to restart it several times then towed it home. I changed what appeared to be a perfectly good fuel filter and it restarted. It was hard to start, but it did finally go. I think there was an air lock in the fuel delivery.

Had similar problem, turned out that one of my batteries had the cells short out in it and that caused my whole electrical system to go haywire. Was able to jump and ran fine till I turned off then the whole thing with the electrical system started again.
