Sounds to me like low fuel pressure during periods of high fuel demand. I'm sure others will chime in since I am not a pro.

Just an interesting note. Today I was talking with the Service Manager at my local Duluth, MN Cummins shop. I was asking him about the lift pump and if their shop had found a better solution for it. They said that they had sold a lot of these pumps, and that Cummins is still putting these engines with the VP44/ lift pump combo in all kinds of equipment, and have not decided to change the lift pump. Furthermore, he said it isn't really a lift pump but a transfer pump. It pulls as well as it would push (if it were mounted back by the tank). He said that it is a pump that was designed to pull, but it is just a weak pump and is prone to failure. Not sure if I should believe this, but thought I'd share.

lift pump

You all are not going to believe this. I am getting ready to change my fuel lines to 3/8 all the to the vp44. I'm going to change all the banjo bolts an put in weber carb bolts.

I have a pusher pump that I have had for a long time and I shut it down to see if my stock lift pump was still going , after 128,000 miles the dam thing is still going and putting out about 5 psi.

I just bought a new lift pump so when I change the lines I will have all new parts. Some lift pumps will last a long time with a little help from a pusher
