Is this a bad lift pump?

I started out this morning and got 1/2 mile from house. Truck died and wouldn't start. I checked out everything I knew with no results. Called dealer and they towed it. The shop foreman called today and said ecm was bad. Ordered a new one and will install tomorrow or next day-- whenever it arrives.

My question is will I have the same program? The truck is a bone stock 2001. 5 with 9500 miles that has always run and pulled super. I'm a firm believer in not changing something that works good. Has the programing of the ecm changed since my truck was manufactured? Will I get the original deal or latest upgrade?

I'm not up on this electronic stuff. Enlighten me please. Thanks in advance.

Newest upgrade is my guess.....

As most of the updates supercede the others I wouldn't even think they would keep the older program. As far as what they told me they can't go back once it's been programmed in.

Then again that's what THEY said. To be taken with a grain of salt and a bullet to bite on when the pain of dealing with the dealer becomes too great to bear.

Love my truck but hate the dealer,

Thunderball - It's bolted to the drivers side of the block. There are a bunch of wires going to it. It ain't cheap to replace, but your Cummins warranty should cover it, after the Dodge warranty runs out. That's if they don't blame your BOMBing for wrecking it. It's the brains for the engine electronics.

I think the ECM failure is uncommon, so don't worry about it. Maybe Cobra won't see this thread and add this to his list of worries.

did you ask them how they knew it was bad? make sure they give you the bad part!! they probably won't since it's a warranty item.

The dealer called today and said I could pick up my truck. They installed the new ecm and attempted to install the latest update. They couldn't make it download. They just received new updates and he said everytime they get new stuff from DC it takes about a week to get everything working again. He wants to update it when they get everything working. Said the only changes he could see from previous version was something about oil pressure signals to gauge and something about cold starting.

I picked up the the truck and it runs fine. I can't tell the difference from before. I think I'll let him update somebody else's. What do you guys (and girls) think?
