Where to get a pump rebuilt

Heading up the road about thirty miles an hour in my 91 350 and bang it was like someone shut the key off. I don't know why I had a fuel filter behind the seat or why I could get the old one off with my hands but after I changed it I tried to fill it with the manual fuel lever and no juice. Do they just blow or go gradually. I had a heater under the truck for about 45 minutes just in case I had some ice in the lines but no go. I will get a pump today and try to put in on roadside. Not a big job in June but it is 0 degrees this morning. Oh Boy.

did you make sure the fuel pump was not just on the high point of the cam? was there any resistance when pumping the arm? if the pump is on the high point you will not get any resistance or fuel when pumping, you can bump the starter to rotate engine

The way it quit sounds like the fuel shutoff solinoid took a dump. Thats what mine did. Going along and it just died. No sputtering or anything.

You can remove the solinoid, carefully remove the spring and plunger and reinstall the solinoid. If this is the problem, the truck will start. You will need to use the shutoff lever on the side of the pump to stop the engine.

On my pump, the solinoid sits behind the linkage mount and is a ***** to get to. I had to make up a special wrench to get to the thing! If you ever take off the linkage mount, cut off the part that sticks up and blocks the access to the solinoid. Will be easy to get to it next time.

(not sure about the spelling here, can't get spell check to work)

I had the same thing happen 3 years ago. Mine was the same problem as Stan, fuel solenoid. Check the voltage to the fuel soleniod. If it less than 10volts you may have an electrical problem. If the voltage is over 10volts, with the key on unplug the wire from the solenoid and plug it back in. You should here it move. If you don't here or feel it move then I would pull it and check it. Check the contacts too and make sure they are clean.

You can check the lift pump by trying the prime lever. I'd crack the banjo bolt to the fule filter and see if it will push fuel. Like RGT said you may have to bump the engine and try again. If it pushes fuel it is probably OK. Change your fuel filter while your at it.

My next thought would be to crack loose an injector line at one of the injectors and crank it over to see if you are getting high pressure fueling.

Can you check for fault codes on your year truck by turning the key on and off three times quickly? If so check the codes.

Good luck

Let us know what you find

Had a similiar problem Thanksgiving morning, truck quit on the way to work. Changed fuel lift pump , still could not get fuel to flow. Thought maybe something was wrong in the tank with the pick-up, so went and got 5 gallons of fuel. When I took the fuel cap off, all I could think of was an old Ross Perot saying: That giant sucking sound! The cap had frozen the vent hole, no problem getting fuel to flow after thawing it out. Just one man's experience. :D
