Dead Speedometer

I have a '95 3500 5 speed manual in which the speedometer just died while traveling down the road. It worked intermittently for a short period of time, but is totally dead now. It looks like the cable is still intact. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Santana Blue, from what you described (intermittent fluctuation of the speedo), I would suspect the (VSS) vehicle speed sensor. The sensor is located at the trans or transfer-case. You can purchase one from NAPA for around 40$. I just went through the same on my vehicle, same symptoms, easy fix.
