I have had a hell of a time. This fall my transmission went so on the way to the transmission shop my lift pump went out. So transmission shop thought at first it was the fuel filter so THEY changed it. that did not help. So the nearest dealer replaced the lift pump. After a week at the transmission shop I got it home and if the truck sits over nite in the drive way sitting up hill it takes forever to start. When I park down hill it starts every time. So back to the dealer. They though it was the lift pump again. There was a leak on it by the plug on the bottom. I got it home still no start. Took it back and they replaced the injection pump, relief valve, and the 3rd lift pump and said it was fixed. By the way they had it for a week. Got it home and it was not fixed. They do not have a clue what is wrong. At least I got a new injection pump out of them. I just needed to vent. If you guys have any ideas let me know. If I take it to a cummins dealer will it be covered under warrenty also. I have 84000 on it. Is it possible that when they put the fuel filter in they did not put the o rings in the right spot. Maybe I should check that.

A friend had one that was hard to start after sitting up hill.

We had changed the filter a day earlier.

He put up with it for a wek or so, then

Started checking and found the filter top was not tight!!

My goof, a 1/8 to 1/4 turn and it has not done it again.

Best guess would be a small leak at the filter allowing the fuel to run back to the tank, pulling some air in. I had similar problem and it was the valve I had installed on the filter to check the fuel pressure. Not much of a leak but it wouldn't start after sitting a few days.

I remember a thread about the exact same problem maybe 2 months ago. I do not remember the result though, but there was an answer.

Ray Torresdal (sp) had a "hard to start" problem recently that about drove him nuts. As I recall, he had a bad O-ring on an injector that was letting air into the fuel system after a sustained shutdown.

The O-ring on an injector is a possibility. I had the exact problem on my 2001. The problem was a copper washer/seal in the injection system. The mechanic was able to finally isolate this after applying vacuum to the injector lines. It should have been able to hold the vacuum, but it would bleed out.

Thanks for the input. I tightened the filter housing and I will see if it starts in the morning. Other wise I have a friend that is the manager down at cummins and he said he would get it figured out. I will let you know the outcome.

It was the nut on the filter housing. Only a half of a turn and it starts every time parked up hill. Even after 28 hours. Boy I bet those dodge mechanics felt like idiots after I told them what was wrong. I bet they double check the filter housing every time they change a filter now. The bill was $2,600 on dodge for a nut that was not tight. HAH HAH HAH!!! FUKIN MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
