Took the RAM in for an oil change at a different place than I usually go to.

Anyway, I decide that after 10 minutes, I will just go stand around at talk to the guy as he is changing the oil. Here on the counter, with lids off, are 10 containers of 10W 30 diesel oil. I say to him "you put 10W 30 in there"?. He tells me "yeah, that's what I put in all the diesels that come in here". EGAD!!!!!!!

I tell him that the manual explicitly states that you are to use 15W 40. He looked like I was asking him to do something completely out of the ordinary!

Anyway, I made him start all over again with 15W 40. He was not a happy camper, but hey, this isn't his $39K investment, right?

So, to all of you who take your truck to the dealer for an oil change - Be cautious and make sure that they are using the right oil!!

Guys this may be a little know secret and it is not cost effective, but if you go to the jiffy lube type places you can take you own filter and oil and they will just do the change for you. My Dad does this all the time when he travels because then he does not have to get rid of the old oil or crawl around on the ground in a campground. Then all you have to worry about is the tightness of the filter and if the dump#$$ put the drain plug in tight.

I have allways changed my own oil and filter except for those years when work schedule did not permit it. About 10 years ago I decided I had "graduated" to the point where I deserved to let someone else do it, so I went to one of the lube and oil places and fortunately had to wait about 15 min. After watching the "staff" servicing the vehicles ahead of me, I pulled out of line and have not been back. Did not want those sorts fooling with my reg.

Shawn, I agree 100%!!! I take mine to the dealers for service but the tech that works on mine has a really good grasp as to what these motors are all about. Plus I take my own oil and filter in to be used. If Roy at National Dodge isn't available then it doesn't get done... ... Pete

One of the reasons I've changed my own oil over the past 30 years is for the very reason you stated. If you aren't standing next to the person performing the service, you really don't know what is going on. Learned mine from a strong armed guy who stripped the threads on my drain plug. Been happy doing my own ever since.
