Dealer ordered me a new turbo!

Took my truck in to have the vibration TSB performed and told them I also wanted them to check out my rear diff howl. Service manager called today and said he and a mechanic drove it for some time listening. Said when they first heard it they thought, sure enough, it's the rear diff. As they drove it a little more though, the mechanic got suspicious and tried to produce the noise by killing the engine and then letting it coast to a stop... couldn't do it. So it can't be driveline. I always hear the howl/whine on deceleration. After a while, they finally localized the sound to the turbo! Said they couldn't find anything obvious - bearings seem ok, boost is normal - but they decided to order me a new turbo.



Anyone experience anything similar?

That's interesting. Could be a bad bearing that still spins okay, but has some small imperfections in the race or maybe a bad ball (or is it a roller bearing?). I'd be interested to hear if that is indeed the problem.

Didn't think to ask what kind of bearing it is. I did ask if anyone would tear down the old turbo once they've replaced it so I'd know what the problem was. He danced around and said it would go back to assembly, so I'll probably never know precisely what it is. I'll update the thread after they've done the swap.

I think I have the same howl or noise you are talking about. Decel or slow driving, maybe worse when cold it sounds like a rearend noise or something. I have had a few people ask me about the noise and wondered about it? I know what a rearend howl sounds like and it is the same but I think is only at slow speeds. Also on my trip to Cali about 800mi into it I fueled up and looked under the truck and saw gear oil wettness around the rear pinion, have not had it checked yet but I wondered if the pinion was set too tight causing heat and seal damage? About 8500mi right now.

A driveline/rearend noise on decel may be different with the truck running compared to not because there may not be as much drag on the coast side of the R&P while the engine is off.

Sounds like they are wasting a good turbo. Bownaway has a very good point. I am pretty sure the turbo still uses a bushing and not ceramic ball bearings. I know of a turbo shop that swears that the older bushing style turbo is better. What vibration TSB did you take it in for?

TSB 19-008-03. The fix is a new PS hose from the pump to the Hydroboost. Supposed to fix or reduce the 1900-2200 RPM vibration/drone.



I'll talk to them about Blownaway's comment. It'll be obvious if the howl is still there after they do the swap.

Johnstra my truck had a noise that I guess could be called a rear diff howl. It was a resonant medium-pitched sound that kicked in around 35-40mph and went away around 50-55. It stayed at constant pitch as speed changed so it wasn't speed affected other than where it started and stopped.



I found out it was my exhaust system causing it. Anytime I gave my tailpipe a swift kick it would go away for a day or two. After I replaced my muffler it totally went away.

What I hear only occurs when I'm slowing down. No noise during acceleration or at constant speed.

My freind had a howl, they replaced the pinion bearings, it went away. Go figure.

I don't want a diff. rebuild with under 10,000 miles, we will see what happens. Slight Howl and pinion seal leak(minor) = Doesn't look good. I'll have to crawl under and look closer when I change the engine oil.

They just put a whole new rear axle assembly in mine, howl gone!

I think that would be a good option for me, I will have it checked out soon, It seems to be a somewhat common problem. I just don't know when I can be without it for awhile... How do I make sure the dealer doesn't flash my computer or mess something up, I am happy with how it runs and I get excellent mileage.

Well, drove my truck with the brand new turbo today, and guess what... yep, the REAR DIFF howl is still there... sigh! I should never have let them talk me into believing there was anything in the world wrong with the turbo. I'll be going down to have little talk with the dealer tomorrow.



I crawled around and looked closely at the rear end. There's no visible leak at the diff or on any of the seals. I did find some lubricant on the bottom of my NV5600 (I posted another thread on this), but I don't think it's the transmission making the noise. I haven't checked my transmission lube level yet, but shifting is smooth.

I'm still betting it's the rear end. Mine was really loud and the new axle completely fixed it.

Was it hard to get them to fix it. I want to take a tech for a ride not just drop it off and hope they find it. . I am a certified ASE tech myself but do not work at a shop at this time. I have not yet checked the rear oil level, it is their problem if the dealership did not catch a problem on delivery.

My truck has about 1500 miles and just started getting the rear end wine when i let off the gas in the past 200 miles. I have not checked the fluid but at this point if its low its two late. I have an appointment with the dealer for next Wed. Also getting the wiper delay and the cruse control fixed. I guess I should get ready for battle with the axle problem, not looking forward to it! Maybe I'll get a turbo neon for a loaner car!

Keep me posted, I Have not had a chance to have mine checked but had a friend(Master Tech) tell me that some of the HD Planetaries in auto's can and have been known to actually make noise at slow speeds. How many of the people with noise problems have the 48RE?
