Dealer overfill? or checking cold....

Got a new '05 SRW 4x4 SWB on the 23rd of Dec. . I had a '01 HO originally.



Well I noticed that I was getting an oil smell from the vehicle when idling or on acceleration away from a stop. Last night I check the oil dipstick and saw that it was 1 inch over full. This morning after getting to work I checked it hot, right after shutdown and it is right on the top of the full mark, now the question:



Which of the readings is correct/closest to correct? I am concerned because after the oil pan gasket recall on my 01 they overfilled it (put in 4 gallons of oil) and I then had a leaky plug as a permanent addition to the spot on the driveway, and I want to ensure that I don't bust anything or hurt the motor as it only has 1200 miles with no load on it now.

The engine oil burning smell is coming from the engine oil breather tube. I thought mine had an oil leak or something wrong too when I first got it, but that is all that it is. As far as the oil level, it shouldn't be much over the mark on the dipstick if exactly 12 quarts were put in. You may have one or two quarts over what you are supposed to. Too bad they don't show an "engine running" and "engine stopped" mark on the dipstick like bigger engines do. If you aren't sure, drain some out, make a mess, and add some back to make up the difference.

IIRC, mine was a little bit overfilled from the factory, but not an Inch overfilled. Maybe an oil analysis would be a good thing for you to make sure an injector isn't leaking.

At oil change time, I can only put in 11qts/with filter change. Never get the last qt. out. Do have to add almost 1 qt extra when the TP get changed in the Frantz.

I had the oil changed along with the fuel filter, transfer case, transmission, and axles last Friday at a dealer...



They charged me for 15!!! quarts of Delo. I couldn't believe it, as the last time I did it the truck took 12. Now the oil checks at about 1" over full.



I think the problem is that they run the truck, shut it down and check the oil immediately. It will read full when overfilled.



If you follow the manual and check the oil with the engine hot after sitting 5 minutes, you'll get a true reading of what the oil level is.



I have been too lazy to do anything about it yet, but I'm going to a hobby shop to get a model airplane fuel pump (runs right off the battery) and some silicone tubing (won't melt with warm engine oil), then pump out 2 or 3 quarts by sticking the silicone tubing down the dip-stick tube. Should cost less than 20 bucks, and save a mess in my driveway from trying to re-insert the drain plug while draining.
