My fuel pump went out at 61k, dealer replaced under warranty, I asked about hte fuel pump, and he said it checked out fine, no need to replace. Has anybody had the VP44 go bad but not the (original) fuel pump?

Same thing here. Dealer checked lift pump, and said it delivered 60 oz in 30 seconds, so it was good. They replaced the VP44, and left the lift pump alone. I will probably change mine out on my own, and keep the old one as an emergency spare.

Just a word of caution, but my last lift pump had an intermitant. It would go a week sometimes without any problems, and then all of a sudden, the pressure would bounce all over the place. I could bury it to zero if I gave any fair throttle action. After a 10-15 miles of babying it , it would then return back to normal. In fact, it always had better pressure than my brand new one. Monitoring these factory lift pumps is the only safe way of protecting the VP44.
