Had my truck into the dealer today for a little routine maintenance. I should preface this with the fact that I took my truck to a dealer I had never been too before. The one I always went to, had a great rapport with ALL of the service guys, trusted their work, etc. , closed a while back. Figures, right? So this was a test for the new dealer. Since my wife was off today, she was kind enough to take my truck in so I didn't have to miss work. I made her a list of the things I wanted done, which matched the list I gave to the service rep. when I made the appointment. All I wanted done was a transmission/transfer case service, coolant flush, and I wanted them to check the PS pump because it makes a racket when it's cold and damp/raining (but quiets down once it gets warm).
She called shortly after she got there and commented on how much the service was going to cost (minus any PS pump work). The price she gave sounded way high for what I wanted done. So she put the service rep on the phone and he started rattling off what THEY though I wanted done. It was going real well till they got to the transfer case when they threw in diff service. I quickly corrected them on that part and we were good to go. As far as the diffs go, back in December I had to have both pinion seals replaced because they were leaking. That took care of any diff service as far as I was concerned. Then a few hours later, I got another call from my wife. She said they found a problem with my truck and wanted to talk to me. This time I got to talk directly to the service tech. The first thing he commented on was the lift pump and was recommend the in-tank replacement. I told him that I was well aware of the issues with the '03-'04 lift pumps and that I had just replaced the factory original with one from Geno's a few months ago. He told me that he couldn't find anything wrong with the PS pump other than it was a bit overfilled. I found that a bit odd. I did top it off just a wee bit several months ago (like 8+ months ago) when it looked like it was down, but I didn't put much in. He said he would drain it to the proper level and suggested that I bring it in sometime to leave it overnight so they could check out the noise I'm hearing. Then he told me that while he was doing the transmission service, he noted that the neutral/safety switch was leaking and fluid was getting into the connector. He then told me that he has seen where it causes a lot of strange electrical things to happen, like the fan clutch not engaging. This is something I had never heard of before. I have noted an occasional odd thing, but never thought anything of it because it always cleared up. I had him replace it and they cut me a break on the labor charge because they were already servicing the transmission. All in all, I don't consider my experience with this dealer as being too bad. It just mught take once or twice to get them trained to the fact that what I tell them I want done is ALL I want done and that they need to call me for anything else. Had to do that with the other dealer too, but once we got that worked out everything was fine.
However, this thing with the neutral/safety switch is something I have not heard about before and I don't recall of seeing anything on TDR about it. Anyone else know about or have experience with this?
