I took my truck in for the heater door tsb and also had the axles serviced. I was talking to the tech as he put the friction modifier additive in the rear. I asked if that was supposed to go in there and got the "of course it is" speech. He also filled it overful and the stuff was gushing out of the hole when he plugged the hole in the cover. Is this something I should worry about ? :confused:

I would be a little worried. I thought that you weren't supposed to use friction modifer in our diffs and to only fill it up to a certain level. Hopefully somebody that knows more about this will chime in. I'm :confused: too!!
 
From what I've read here and elsewhere, the modifier is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY 'cause we ain't got any clutches back there. However, it shouldn't harm anything. I've got a little howl back there now that I've been thinking about "treating" with a little bit of the modifier to see what happens.



The level... I would expect that when you check your rear end next time, it won't be quite as overfull. I usually fill mine until it starts coming out and then plug it as soon as I can. Never had a prob. doing it that way yet.

Thr friction modifier should have no ill effect on the LSD unit. And as far as the level is concerened it should be filled to 1/4" below the fill hole with a 1/4" +/- variable meaning running it up and out the hole should'nt hurt it at all. I have not done mine yet on the 05 but will probably fill it till it runs out the hole then drive it and if the oil seems foamy I'll suck the level out a little.

I would be more worried if he didn't use the friction modifier. If you don't use it the clutches in the LSD wont slip and will break. Broken clutches do a lot of damage when the pieces get caught in the gears.
 
i wouldnt worry either unless they charged you. you dont need it but it shouldnt do any harm. Also these rear are supposed to have synthetic and most synthetics dont require the modifer.
 
I had a Jeep dealer service the diffs on my 03, and they put in friction modifier. It chattered like crazy when I would go around a corner, so I had them change it again. No ill effects after that. Not sure what made it chatter as there are no clutches.
 
I am always amazed to hear about service techs adding friction modifier to 3rd gens. If they know enough to add it to a 2nd gen, then they should know enough to NOT add it to the 3rd gens. The 3rd gens have been out for well over two years now.

When I first put my Mag-hytec on I filled the rear to a little below the "full" mark on the dipstick. After 20K I warmed it up and pulled the plug and what came out really wasn't "oil", it was foamy. The rear end wasn't even hot, I didn't tow anything to warm it up. I refilled it to the small level plug that's supposed to approximate the factory level. We'll see what happens next time. Every time I checked the level, the oil looked fine, never cooked or anything so maybe nothing bad happened. The only thing I did notice was that the magnetized part of the dipstick was ALWAYS covered in filings. So I guess what I'm saying is, Level full is OK, but I don't really know about overfilling.
